Title: The Moonscapes
Post by: Raygun on June 06, 2010, 10:58:45 PM
Hi
What is the best way to go about rendering the moon, where do i start as far as resources, and basic execution as a quick start.
I plan to have moonscapes, not so much in space looking at it. Hope someone can help.

There may be dem (or other geo data) available at the NASA web site. It may be a good place to begin.

Try doing a search on "crater" here - there's some interesting material, including a way to generate multiple craters.

Do you want to render *The Moon* or *a* moon? If you want to render The Moon, find a bump map for it (free online) then apply it with an Image Map Shader to your Planet using Spherical Projection. Set the Image Map Shader's position to the same as the planet's center.

Find a bump map and diffuse (color) map for the Moon somewhere, Celestia has some good stuff in its textures folder.
