Is there any way to warp a crater with the redirect shader but have the ground un-warped?
I want to use it to make an irregular shaped lake in the ground but I don't want the ground itself to be warped.

Try using a power fractal terrain in the crater's Rim Shader input. You can also make a heightfield and vertically offset it so it's below the terrain, then increase the border blending slider. Generate the heightfield and there you go. I haven't tried the heightfield method, but it should work.
