Title: Overhangs in different directions
Post by: Blackheart6004 on July 15, 2010, 02:53:52 PM
I've been trying to do this type of change to my overhangs. I've been adding the Redirect shader and Twist and Shear shader to 2 separate terrain for overhangs to go in 2 different directions but don't see any progress on it :(

Everytime I do it, even with 2 twist and shear shaders with different lean direction, my terrain goes into one direction with the two.

So does anyone knows how to do this like in the example render? http://www.planetside.co.uk/gallery/f/tg2/begann_dasloch.jpg.html
Notice that there are 2 overhangs in different directions.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using a 'merge' shader on two seperate directed terrain chains?

I haven't used that shader before but I'll try. Thanks for the help :)

No problem. There is a check box within the shader 'choose by altitude', where I'd advise you check 'highest (raise)'. This will make sure your peaks poke through.

What about the "Mix Controller" box?

The Mix controller box, is where you apply another shader. White = 1, black =0. If nothing is connected, then it uses the 'Mix to A' value, which defaults to 0.5, ie equal mix of both inputs.

Ah ok.

One more question - How exactly do i set up the merge shader with the overhangs?

There's loads of ways to skin a cat, but in this case, make a terrain with overhangs in one direction. Then duplicate those nodes, then apply another direction in your twist and shere, and maybe hit random seed a few times on the duplicated PF.. Plug those two strings of nodes into the merge shader.....

Have a play. You'll get to understand what's going on better.

Big thanks for the help, Hetzen! The merge shader is truly a wonder for this effect. :)

The results are in the attachment, rendered without the sky. Now to add some displacements  ;D

That's pretty cool.
