Title: I'm looking for an app to log my internet connection data rate.
Post by: cyphyr on August 07, 2010, 03:04:15 PM
I'm looking for an app to log my internet connection data rate, any suggestions?
I've found several that run online or give a snapshot but I want one that will build up a log over time. Maybe something that pings google every min and saves the time it takes ... .. .
Thanks
Richard

Thanks :)
This is similar to several others I have already seen. What I'm looking for is something that will quietly run in the background without any input from the user simply recording the data rate at regular intervals.
Cheers

How about this Richard?

Netlimiter will help you monitor actual traffic and limit it, if desired. But it sounds like what Richard may want is a tool to regularly see how fast his connection *can* be, e.g. a scheduled, regularly running speed test. Is that right Richard? In that case you might find some of these tools helpful: http://www.dslreports.com/tools (not all are free)

The resource monitor in Vista and Windows 7 will do this. I can't remember how though. I think I had to tell Windows to log the connection. I used to monitor everything when I was using a WIFI connection for internet access. Let me mess around with my computer. I may be able to find it again. (I hate the way Microsoft needs to hide everything. Wait, maybe it was something I downloaded from Microsoft; administrative tools...)

I think this was it. At least this may be the current version.

Again, it's not clear to me that what he wants to do is what you think he wants to do, which is to monitor *how much he's actually downloading*. It sounds more like he wants to test his connection on theoretical speed tests periodically throughout the day to see if it fluctuates (verify his connection is reliable). I could be wrong through.

I think the link will do this. At least it is the impression I had from reading the blurb on the Microsoft site.

Oooh lots of suggestions. What I'm trying to do is enable my girlfriend to have some data to challenge the internet provider with.
She's paying for an "up to" 8MB connection but every time I've ever tested it its nearer to 0.45MB on the download rate or wont connect at all!
The service provider says that the extremely slow connection is a "Temporary problem" and although the line is admittedly "up to" 8MB she should on average be nearer 4MB to 6MB.
To be honest 0.45MB is a fair rate considering she lives out in the "boon docks", hicksville part of the county!! No ones expecting the Internet company to dig up the road and put in a new pipe for a small isolated community of probably less than 100 internet connections but it would be nice if they admitted that their claims were a little inflated and charged for their service accordingly!! Hopefully one of the links above will be for an app that can monitor bandwidth and provide a log so at least her complaint is taken seriously.
Thanks
Richard
