Title: Quad core system
Post by: alok99 on September 04, 2010, 04:04:04 PM
Hi everyone.

So I'm currently rendering a short animation using Terranim and Terragen. It's going to be 1529 frames. Currently it's rendering frame #87, and it's been going for about an hour.
I've noticed that Terragen 0.9 is using 25% of my CPU, which makes sense since I have a quad core system. Is there any way to spread the rendering across the cores to shorten the time?

I thought about making 4 scripts in Terranim, with each one being a quarter of the entire animation. Then I'd run 4 copies of Terragen, each one rendering from a different script. Would this work?  :)

I believe that should work.  You can just open up your complete script in a text editor and cut it into 4 pieces, so you don't need to make 4 new scripts from terranim.

I didn't know you could edit the .tgs files in a text-editor!
Unfortunately, Terragen crashed when it tried to read the "in-between" scripts. So I ended up making 4 scripts.

Now I have three copies of Terragen running, each on a separate CPU. I'm leaving the fourth core for me  ::)

Thanks!
