Title: I have been asked and I don't know?
Post by: Andrew March on September 11, 2010, 01:46:03 AM
Can anyone help answer this one for me:

Anybody played with the LRO LOLA LDEM files yet to pull out terrains to use in apps like Terragen? The LDEM files are different from the old MOLA files from MGS, and I
can't use my regular MacDEM/Photoshop/Terragen combo to get landscapes to happen. Can TG2 read .img files directly? Or does it need the .img to be converted to a 16-bit grayscale image?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would take the image and convert it to a greyscale bitmap. You can use the displacement shader to make the height field from an imported image. Terragen 2 converts images to bitmap internally I believe. Might as well stay 'native'.

I believe the native format reader only handles MOLA IMGs, unless the format hasn't changed. Converting to another format would be a safer bet if you have access to conversion software.
