2nd wip render, changed grass types to wild grass (2x), added bushes
i like this version better.

The second looks like you've shined a flashlight in the woods, and the first looks like the flashlight is off. I personally like the first one as it seems a little more realistic, though I do like the grass of the second better, at least in this kind of scene.

Perhaps if the light was smaller and more intense it would give the effect of being the only person in the area.

Could be an old style acetylene lantern. They were very bright. I like the 2nd render better.

lowered light source radius, and lowered the light intensity, looks a bit darker now, it looks good to me (both could look good to me)

currently re-rendering it at home.

i'm thinking in the future i will add a small lightsource inside a jack o lantern.

dark enough for ya? :)

imagine a jack o lantern where the brighter light source is

This last image seems just right. I would do the jacko' lantern and a lamp to light the background trees.

the final deserves a high-resolution render i think :)

inky, i think i'm going to stick with the pumpkin i'm making, i need something with a little more realism & model quality
should'nt take that long, if it done in time i'll share it i think

Maybe after you get that pumpkin in there, you could try using metaclouds to add some ghosts. ;D
Title: Re: Coming soon-Halloween render
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 16, 2010, 07:43:35 PM
i had thought of that TBH, but i was thinking i would use a picture of a ghost and project it through camera ( of after tweaking the image some in gimp)

that might be better if i was going for more specific look.

Maybe project it onto a cloud, if it works that could look really ghostly.

the pumpkin is almost ready for me. :D

gotta UV map it too, i'll be using road kill for that.

This might work for a ghost in the background. This image started out as the final boss in Earthbound, then I edited it in GIMP to look more like a ghost.

Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 21, 2010, 06:33:33 PM
ray trace everything does a quick job, this one only took an hour, pretty good considering all the instances in the scene (8 populations)

finished the normal pumpkin, still trying to get a good looking UV mesh with Roadkill

added the jack-o-lantern.

there are color maps & displacement maps on the pumpkins/jack-o-lanterns, but its kinda hard to tell that their there at this resolution.

unwrapped with roadkill
textured it with MapZone2 & GIMP.

A very mean looking jackolantern. I imagine the Headless Horseman carrying one very much like it.

Ugh. I hate malware. A couple weeks ago I got two rogue "security" programs that accused hundreds of system files of being viruses and kept me from doing anything. I had to restore to factory defaults and in the process lost everything on the hard drive. >:(

Try running the free version of McAfee. A friend had a virus just like this. McAfee was able to handle it.
AVG full version, do a rootkit scan.

Lane, I can literally only see a black rectangle with a little grinning pumpkin at the bottom. My lcd monitor is admittedly not the greatest but the images on page 1, especially the second one, look great. Can everyone else make out features in the blackness? I think I need to recalibrate my screen, again. I can see a tiny hint of light against the edge of one, maybe two, trees, absolutely nothing else.

* OK, just looked at it on my girlfriend's computer, she has a great screen, I can see into the trees, a little. Yup, it's very, very dark for my taste. Still, I need to try and balance this screen a little better...

black box?
what are you talking about Martin?? the only black box i have is my computer case! :D ;D

ok, the version will brighter.

@TBH - i will use your ghost and compare it to another one.

I like the picture! I don't know what you can do about it, but I'd suggest making the face of the pumpkin a little more blurred.

WOW!

Now I can see 4 pumpkins and every tree. My bad, sorry, Lane! :D This monitor has been out of whack for too long that I've just got used to it over time. Now it's all good! :)

doing some test renders right now, trying to get TBH's ghost to work, decided to switch back a cloud layer cause positioning the plane was frustrating.
some how the detail setting on the quick render got set to 2, no wonder it was taking longer :D

its difficult placing these floating jackolanterns, i have move the both the jackolantern and the lightsource, then there are trees and limbs blocking the view from the camera.  :P

Using your modeling program, move the Center Point of the pumpkin where you want the light source to be. This way the light will be in the center of the pumpkin with copy and paste.

Title: Re: jack-o-lantern & pumpkin (v2)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 29, 2010, 02:26:19 PM
thats what i have been having trouble with, trying to get the ghost to appear correctly, i'm trying to get it to work with a cloud layer, through camera projection,  with a separate camera to project it, and its just not appearing.
when i render it looks like i have a thick fog.

i also overlooked a problem with using ghost photographs for a masks, they don't make very good images that can be used for masking, with as most of them have a non-black background.
Title: Re: jack-o-lantern & pumpkin (v2)
Post by: Henry Blewer on October 29, 2010, 03:03:53 PM
I would use an object, plane. Project the ghost image and the alpha image onto that. The edges of the plane may show... But that could be painted out.
Title: Re: jack-o-lantern & pumpkin (v2)
Post by: TheBlackHole on October 29, 2010, 03:08:34 PM
This might help. Put it in your scene and make it face the camera, then apply the texture using object UV.
Title: Re: jack-o-lantern & pumpkin (v2)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 29, 2010, 03:10:44 PM
i'll try those methods, then concentrate on a final render.
Title: Re: jack-o-lantern & pumpkin (v2)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on October 30, 2010, 11:34:40 AM
i'm not sure whats going on, its still not working  ???

i tried both methods, and whenever i render it appears to be invisible
first i made a plane in LW
then i tried TBH's billboard

i also tried rendering without the alpha channel, and with only the default gray color, & still appears to be invisible.

You have a nice progress going here. The latest image looks very creepy. I can imagine those head in the back being somehing more than just jackolanterns :D
