Title: Great Falls (well... maybe getting great)
Post by: Dune on October 16, 2010, 02:31:16 AM
I worked some more on waterfalls, and came to this WIP. I have some improvements in my head, so it will be updated.

This is far closer to what I was striving for than I ever came up with. Great job Ulco!

This is surely getting great!
I also like the rock texture.
If you should need some rainbow... ;)

I like where this seems to be going. I am looking forward to what you will improve!

Looking good :)
Would playing with the sub surface decal distance help with the hard edges?
Great cliff face too.

Thanks guys  ;D Here's another iteration, a kind of African Great Rift Fall (with some African trees I won in the contest, coming in handy now). It's hard to get the fall 'voluptuous', and hard to get the rock where I want them, and not want them.

Fatter water would have more weight.  ::)
I was thinking about this some last night. Maybe very hard, high density cloud/s would work. Stretch them out on the y axis to mimic water falling.

Yes, but then there's the difficulty to get the cloud to be restricted to a certain angle, and not fall straight down. In this file I used this stretched cloud at first to mimic the water falling apart into droplets further down, but wasn't satisfied with it so dropped it. It was blended by the same painted shader as the falls. I might dive into it again, as a combination would indeed yield better results.

It would be nice to have a 'Restrict by Volume' sort of tool. Just make a box where you would like a cloud/s and they only appear there.

Exactly. I would love to be able to make smoke coming out of chimneys for instance. Thin fat start, then widen and get wispier. Just have them read in a box and set them over the house.

Anyway, here's another iteration. I had to clone out (only) a few exploded stones, as they were restricted by a painted shader, which somehow gives a hard edge where dark gray hits black, even when painted very softly. I added 80% tiny blue green fake stones in the foam layer, which already had a reflective shader.

the low altitude cloud looks cool! amazing work! you have a very good talent in camera positioning which is the one i lack :D
