Title: Help With Generating A Specific Terrain
Post by: Fortran on October 16, 2010, 03:17:30 PM
Hi guys,
Just got into Terragen2 and have followed a couple of tutorials, have now decided to try to put this to good use to create a skybox for a game I am working on. However I need a little help understanding how to generate a particular type of mountain/hill formation. I have attached a picture below detailing the kind of terrain I am trying to create.

If anybody has any pointers as to how to create this style of terrain I would seriously appreciate it. Am very new to the software still so am still finding it quite a steep learning curve.

Thanks for any help :)

If you want something exactly like this, best bet would be to use the actual data for this area.  If your image was from the USA then you can find the data here:  http://seamless.usgs.gov  If the image is from somewhere else in the world there may or may not be detailed enough data available.

Hi RArcher, many thanks for replying. This is actually from North Korea so I am unsure if the data would be available for it. I don't need it to be identical I was just hoping to be able to replicate that kind of ridged hill formation style shown in the picture. Thanks again for your input.

I agree with Ryan and would add that if you want to create a terrain "similar" and in the "style" of your image try experimenting with the Alpine fractal with possibly a warp shader.

Good luck

Or just start with a mixture of ridged perlins and perlins, blended by a soft perlin...

Echo Dune's suggestion. Use a merge shader to combine them. The merge shader has lots of power!
