Hi everyone
Im a terragen 2 newbie, does anyone have any idea where I can find free resources for recreating the land/sea surface of the earth, would this be geotif files
and seciondly
anyone know of any tutorials for cloud packs, Im trying to render out a 4k image of clouds from orbit and terragen keeps giving me 'an unkown error occured in TraceRay) - machine Win7 Pro, 12gb ram 2 x xeon processors, 16 threads
thank you for looking
Well in general for really large areas of the earth viewed from space the best data to use would be the SRTM elevation data: http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/ (http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/)
For closer/more detailed areas the data is scattered around usually based on what each country produces or is not available at all. Some countries (I'm directing dirty looks at you here UK Ordnance Survey) only sell this data for obscene amounts of money. You can find USA data here: http://seamless.usgs.gov (http://seamless.usgs.gov) and Canadian data here: http://geobase.ca (http://geobase.ca)
For cloud packs I would look here: http://www.nwdanet.com/buy-packs/7-preset-packs/51-nvseal-global-clouds-pack.html (http://www.nwdanet.com/buy-packs/7-preset-packs/51-nvseal-global-clouds-pack.html)
The errors you are getting are likely you running out of available RAM. TG2 can currently only use around 3.7gb on a 64 bit OS even though you may have much more available. To render your scene at 4k without crashing you may need to limit the number of threads you use at once, or reduce the size of the Subdiv cache somewhat to try to stop running out of RAM.
