Title: Ice Canyon

First try to match this photo for fun... will be continued, as there's much not good enough yet.

Wow, that's impressive. You of course need brighter blue subsurface for true accuracy to the picture, but your image is already surprisingly close. Great snow/ice shader you've come up with here!

very nice work buddy.....is the terrain procedural or image map?

Quoteha, i just was about to try this too
Why don't you?! Would be interesting as a comparison.

@dhavalmistry: I had two versions, one with a painted shader, but I couldn't get the top of the valley to round of, due to the 'black-very dark gray' gradient between painted-not-painted, so I quickly painted a simple gray map in PS with a just off-black background. There must be other ways, but this worked the fastest. The rest is procedural.

Here's version 2. I didn't want to exactly mirror the photo, but get something quite similar. So I added the gulls and some more cracks.

Here's the mask (tiff saved as 95% quality jpg) for anyone wishing to have a go. I made it 3000x3000 I think.

Hmm, not sure what you did for this 2nd version but I kind of feel the first was a bit more successful somehow. I think maybe the lighting/atmospherics? I can see the terrain shape has changed a bit too, and at the bottom where the ice meets the water on the far bend to the right, I think the previous version was a bit more convincing. *shrug* They both look good. :D

The first one I did with a painted shader, the second with the mask. And in the first there were still some fake stones, which somehow turned out as negatives (a minus sign in the size perhaps). I don't like the glassy bits in the first, they're too bright and give it too much 'mess'. Although they do look like ice a bit. Ah, and the water level is different. I'm now working on a completely procedural snaking ice river, no mask, no painted shader.

excellent render Dune

I know this is only wip but the snow is very specular compared to the original image.
