winter elsewhere...
a sort-of winter-alien world themed render
i like it myself, but i'm wondering what other will think of it.
comments / critiques welcome
I like it! You don't often see "winter" on other worlds. ;D Nice use of Walli's new plant too.

it was a short render, 1 hour; i could crank up the image size and even the AA without it taking forever i bet.
Nice one! A wider point of view (for us widescreen monitor users) would be cool.
Yes, I have a few awesome T2 renders I use for backdrops. It gets me thinking about how they were done.
Nice. Some sparkle an small displacements in the snow would benefit the scene. Try this tgc as your child. First have a look in the interior, and link the distance shader to your render camera.
i'm using TU's snow shader, i got the sparkles to appear again when i rendered with GI surface details on, but when i did a larger hi-quality render, they were less visible.
i'll try rendering with your nodes and see how it looks.
Nice to see my snow shader again :)
You can add displacements by connecting a powerfractal to the snow-surface layer's displacement input port.
Stretch the powerfractal on the X or Z-axis, depending on the orientation of your camera. Ideally you would like some horizontal looking displacements.
Set all the scales to around 0.05 (around 4 octaves) and disable the displacement in the displacement tab.
In the surface layer set the displacement to 0.05 as well.
Start working from there and you should be able to get something like this:

Very nice already - the red plants make a lovely colour contrast. And the snow already looks good, so if you're able to use hints from T-U and Dune to improve it that would be great.
version3, with snow displacements, i think the scales may need to be a wee bit smaller, what do you think?
C & C welcome.
Hi
Nice displacements but I think it would be better by increasing reflectivity
Yes, perhaps slightly smaller scales - and it would really benefit from some specular highlights (which as I recall is built in to T-U's set-up).
for some reason snow .tgc does'nt look as good as the one in the .tgd, or in the render, required some tweaking
i started a render with (better) reflectivity this morning, i will post it when i get home (when its done)
(with smaller displacement scales also) :)
the new render did'nt come out the way i wanted it to look, so i'm currently tweaking it again, borrowed some nodes from the TGD that came with the pack, and am rendering what looks like good results :)
ill post a render in a little while. :)
hows this look?
Now, the sparkles are there. Looks good, apart from the size ;)
very nice - as mentioned before, only the scale issue remains. Of course you also could scale the bushes bigger, instead of the snow smaller ;-)
i decided to rescale the bushes, and started a new render.
i've been thinking about doing a DOF version, from a different POV, like close up to the Selenicereus obtineriis thats in the foreground...
This is looking really cool, I love the contrast between the bushes and the snow with the sky. Very unexpected to have a red plant with white snow but it looks great.
wireframe preview is sooo great......! :)
close up of Selenicereus obtineriis
(still working on the original pov and surfacing)
C&C welcome
Ohhh...
I realy like the new Point of View. ;D
yeah i like it a lot too, thats also the pov i want use DOF on.

Ohhh...
I realy like the new Point of View. ;D
i believe i have i gotten the sparkles and small displacements to looking just right, though when i render with higher resolution/details/AA it looks a little bit different.
version 4, about to start larger renders from the 2nd pov.
c&c welcome.
I think this is ready for a final render. They all look good, but the last seems ready.
Agree with Henry - looks excellent. Well done!
version 5, with 2nd pov
c&c welcome
old render, one i never posted anywhere, until now - one without mr lamposts bushes
different pov
i think i am ready for some cold weather. :)
C&C welcome.
Perhaps another grass model would be better; something with some high stems that would raise above the snow to break the further grass/snow line, IYGMM. And I'd also give the snow just a little color, translucency and luminosity with a default shader, like in this one (look inside).
