Can someone direct me to a tutorial or thread that shows you how to make soil look like soil instead of a rock painted black? I want a really gritty, grainy topsoil look as in the photo, but I can't get it to look right. I've seen it done in TG2 renders so I know it's possible.
Your help is appreciated.
This shouldn't be too hard. You'd just have to experiment with a few PF's on top of eachother with slightly different color hues and displacements.
Mix the fractals noise types also. Billows for the soil clumps, ridged for the 'cracks', etc;
and you can't go wrong with a whole bunch of tiny fake stones!
you can start by following this tutorial...

and here is my result

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll post my results later.
Hmmm. I didn't work out so well. I must have done something wrong. I'll keep playing around with it.
It still looks like rocks painted in a dirt colour. ???
if you post a screen then maybe I can try to figure out what went wrong...
The key is finding the right scale for PF and adding micro displacements....
I'm gonna try again with Dune's advice. I'll post a screen shot of my results tomorrow.
Thanks for your help, all.
not sure if that's an option for you, but this should provide you with what you need: http://www.nwdanet.com/buy-packs/7-preset-packs/29-dirt-and-soil-pack-by-rarcher.html
