Title: Corsican Dreams
Post by: Planetscape on December 06, 2010, 07:09:51 AM
Hey folks,

my name is Niels and I've worked quite a bit with the old Terragen when it
was still regularly used. A few days ago I decided to pick up the free
version of TG2. With a lot of experimenting this image came out.

As you might probably notice; there's a blanket of white dots in the image. I
have no idea what caused this. I turned all sliders (atmo, clouds, overall render quality)
close to the highest possible. It did render tremendously fast (14 minutes only ).

If you have any suggestions on how to make this image better, I would gladly
put some more work into it!

The terrain is a processed DEM of Corsica, stretched x2 for some interesting
peaks and added some fractal detail.

Somehow my snow layer won't stick to the steep slopes. Even after turning off
slope constraint, it still won't show as a nice dense pack of snow. Guess I should
experiment a little more to get the result I want  :D

Hi Niels, nice start and welcome to the forums.

Setting render settings to max everywhere isn't usually necessary - there's a sticky on Render settings in the TG 2 Discussion session that's very useful.

The white dots could be one of two things - since you mention you had problems with your snow layer, it's just possible that they are snow. I wonder why it's not showing up properly - have you set any altitude restrictions? Is there a break-up shader at work? What's the coverage set at?.

The more likely source of the white dots is a little bit of breakage in the terrain. You mention that you've stretched it - you could try unstretching to see if that helps. Or tone down the level of fractal detail.

Good luck!

one thing I have been told to do in situation of terrain holes is increase the gradient patch size in compute terrain node....I have had 50-50 success with it so I cannot say that it will work 100%

nice start btw.....I really like your sky and clouds...and maybe decrease the strength of secondary sun (if you have any)

keep it up!

Thanks for your suggestions! I've been experimenting all day on another surface and I didn't encounter this
particular error anymore!
