Title: Mass Effect
Post by: Dan on December 07, 2010, 05:23:54 AM
hey guys,
its been a while since my last post but i finally managed to sort of finish an image...still not entirely happy with it though ;)
i made this one up as a tribute to the amazing mass effect games...also trying to achieve the same look via postwork
the normandy model was built by Thorreign, available here: http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=167
i rendered it in blender to get the effect for the back engines...
so only the planet is TG ;) any recommendations on how to improve the cloudscape are welcome =)

I'm not familiar with rendering in blender but I would check to see what kind of settings there are for motion blur - from the picture it looks like you used 'center' ( a quick google got me this: http://www.blender.org/documentation/htmlI/x8480.html ) it looks like the ship is moving forward and backward at the same time...renderman for instance doesn't just render a bunch of sub-frames and comp them together...
for a still like this it might just be enough to use photoshop and do give the ship a tiny bit of trailing blur, or just leave it out entirely...space shots are often very crisp.
and for the engines photoshop might be better there also...

the planet is nice - might be a bit over exposed but that might just be my monitor.

you might also want to check the noise in the lens flare...and there is a matte line from the ship pass....seems like the lower left corner is not blended properly.....

what was your render time like?

ok here is a new version...thanks a lot for your comments, it seems i got a bit hasty in the end with mistakes like wrong blending modes or lines in the image :/refine
i removed the lines, reworked the planets exposure, moved the motion blur layer to fit properly and changed the blending mode of the vignette so that it there is no blurry left corner...
the noise however is there on purpose as mass effect has a very grainy look ;)
render time for the planet was around 20-30 minutes on my core i5 notebook...

Nice work on the last comp. It is much better.

you still have that edge I was talking about earlier....and I am not sure if you are comping the motion pass correctly....what are you using to comp?

the motionblur was done in photoshop...and it would be nice if you could be a bit more precise about that line =)

I am sorry I was mistaken....the line I was talking about is from lensflare.....it looked very similar to the matte line in the first one.....

as per motion blur....it looks like you are applying the motion blur onto the duplicate layer of the ship......if so, try applying it onto the original layer....
