Title: Animal models?
Post by: Harvey Birdman on March 23, 2007, 01:20:27 PM
Yeah! It's Friday...

:)

Anyway, I've observed all the threads lately about plants, trees, ivy. On my own on the web I've found models of fish, monsters, all sorts of stuff. One thing I haven't found, though, are models of wildlife. My own modeling skills are ... we'll kindly describe them as 'rudimentary'. (Picture a 6-year-old sculpting in clay with a shovel.  ;D  )  So has anyone ever seen decent models of things like deer, bear, racoons, etc?

I'm not sure about a lot of these, but taking the DAZ|Studio package (for free at http://www.daz3d.com) and exporting these as objects, you might find some interesting and useful objects.  I know DAZ has a lot of animals as well.  Most of these cost money.

There are many models of animals out there but the problem is that their quality dose not do justice to Terragens level of realism. Animals have fur, feathers, scales and subtle details that only advanced renderers can support. I would love it if TG2 were able to do this kind of thing, but I think it is highly unlikely.

Calico - thanks for the links.

Cyphyr - yeah, I was coming to that conclusion. I'm afraid the ones I've seen wouldn't do close up, anyway. Now there's a fun project - a fur shader for TG2! And a scales shader, and a feather shader (with specialized descendents for peacocks and hummingbirds) ...

Are you listening, Matt and Oshyan?

<edit>

Just saw an ad for NextEngine (www.nextengine.com) - '3D scanning on your desktop'. Cool! Now all I have to do is get a moose on my desktop...

;D

Harvey,

One of the best modelers I've seen is here - http://www.expressionimage.com and he creates creatures, though not wildlife as you probably expect it.  That said, his textures are pretty realistic for humans and for creatures.

Hey, calico...

As you say, not really what I'm looking for, but pretty stuff. I wish I could do that sort of thing.

If you manage that then you would have to keep the moose still  ;D

Whenever I get a moose on my desktop, I find that singing to them tends to make them stay still  :-\

......dose anyone think this is getting slightly off topic  ???

Nah.  We need to figure out a solution to the moose on the desktop.  Easy Scanning is the goal.   :P

If only it were that simple...

The greatest challenge is not getting the moose on the desk; it is managing to still have a desk afterwards.

And the mess they leave behind... who wants to clean moose muffins out of the scanner?

Hey, this might be a good deal for an animal object with great textures - http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/shop/itemdetails/-/?item=5057&cat=4  Only $5 (on sale).  But, I have this feeling Harvey wants something more down home, like a coyote or an elk.

I'm still looking, Harvey.

Are you talking about the Elasmosaurus? Or did you get the wrong link?

Yeah, maybe I will do a rendering of my pond and stick that puppy in it.

Yes, the Elasmo-thingamajiggy   :o  I think it's only on sale one more day and the textures are going to be top quality.  This vendor backs his work.

I can't wait for transparency in TG2.  Objects like this could be wonderful.
