Title: Medieval Windmill
Post by: Dune on February 06, 2011, 03:46:14 AM
I found some intriguing old watercolors on the internet depicting ancient wooden windmills, so I decided to model one. Might come in handy. Still struggling, but I managed to pull this object out. Rest is XFrog and TG2 of course. The road is a simple painted shader road.
A WIP, as the foreground is way too 'clean', IMO.

I agree about the foreground, way too clean, probably needs "ruts" as well.
The lighting is lovely, dawn but still chilly!
Great windmill model.
looking forward to seeing this progress :)

Very nice work here. The 'whole' image pulls itself together well, but the foreground needs some work. My imagination of how windmills look comes from postcards. These were/have been painted with bright colors. The bare wood really fits here quite well though.

This one brings much of reality together ...inspirational work.

lovely scene, all well done so far.

If I may, I'd like to add that somehow the fog isn't looking as convincing as it probably could. Can't exacty put my finger on it, but especially the fog on the left side isn't quite right. The reason escapes me though.

Regards,
Frank

I didn't like the fog either. I quickly threw it in, but dropped it again. Here's an update, with freshly made fence.

Wow, this is a keeper.
Lighting wise, it's photo realistic if you ask me. The vegetation is also very good, as is the sky. If you had possessed more detailed objects for the long houses and the fence texture, I reckon it be hard to tell from a photo.
Besides all this, it's also a very pleasant scene!
Congrats!

Realism rules here; what a fantastic picture. You've got to be very satisfied with this one!

this looks good pov wise IMHO, but try and replace those trees, the branches dont hold realistic leaves, they look like bats

Fantastic! The grasses are especially convincing, Ulco.

I prefer it without the fog, too. It feel it had a kind of optimized look at the left hand side, did you use stepping or some acc' cache on the layer? I dunno, something just looked a little off.
This one is really great, though. I love it.

Thanks. The mist was a miss, didn't put enough effort into it, and I prefer this one as well. But I think Redwolf is right about the (XFrog) tree. I might try another one. And I should redo the texturing and smoothing on the fence. The grass is a mixture of three, among which the 'indiginous grass clump' (see the left side). I think I'll make some dead grass to intersperse with this, and add some pop variation. It is looking too healthy.

Updated with different trees, some dead grass, smoothed fence and some remaining paint on the windmill.

excellent update ulco, though I too agree about the blue paint?
aesthetically speaking of course!
maybe red would be nicer?

Extra fine and photo-realistic ...the painted color is a matter of choice - would look good in any color.

I'll try some red, and make it semi-transparent (wood shining through). It's too fat here anyway.

for some reason I cant view the update here, where as it says 17 posts, i see only 13, I get this trouble with a few others here as well as my last post.

I really like the mood in this image. Very convincing render and a very good PoV ... red is a good idea ... this kind of red of swedish cottages I assume ,-)

Sorry, I kept it blue, although a more subtle, old color, semi-transparent and with a little shine, like real paint. It's on my website... www.ulco-art.nl (http://www.ulco-art.nl) as I'm quite pleased with it as well.

excellent render, and im quite impressed with those paintings too
what you use oil or alkyds?, I find alkyd a better medium to use as a its ultrafast drying

Mostly oils, mixed with alkyd medium indeed, but also watercolor, and some illustrations done in Photoshop with a Wacom pen (like the tawny owl and fox in illustrations).

Here's another setting with windmill and medieval dwelling.

Another nice pov, I reckon the rutted road should be darker, brownish, at the moment it looks like wet concrete

another great pov indeed, maybe the muddy track isn't so bad...but could be tweaked a little?

I like the path. Looks like a sandy, coastal track.

Looks wonderful. I personally preferred the earlier pov. I think the use of objects in this scene feels just right. It Certainly doesn't have that "first person shooter computer game look" that often occurs in terragen. Nice one!

Maybe the mud could be somewhat darker/browner to better show the wet bluish tinted parts... anyway, here's another sunset version. I know there's some grain in the sky, too bad. And I really should have a nicer colorful sunset sky

I love this one too..I am almost there!

From start to finish, this work is very pleasing. Agree that maybe the earth road needs to have some brown intermixed.

Like this. I added a little fill light, or it would be very dark. Still a bit of grain in the sky, I'm afraid.

excellent, I love the Heron(?) and the tracks in the muddy path remind me of an Escher print....

The heron is a very nice addition. I like the sky very much also.
