Title: Empty Pockets
Post by: choronr on March 20, 2011, 08:08:35 PM
She went to Sin City in her new Cadillac and a bundle of cash; spent three days there  and lost is all. She traded her vehicle for a Mini and a little more cash; but, in short order, lost all that cash too.
Now, she is trying to barter with the proprietor of the service station for a tank of gas with  her Rolex watch so she can get back to Phoenix albeit with empty pockets ...will she make it?

This project was a fun experience learning about new techniques. The following are the elements I used for the image:

•   dandelO's 'Top Gear' .tgd file available in File sharing. Learning about the use of the simple shape shader; creating a road;  and, another way to create vegetation/populations (grass clumps) was especially good.
•   Gas station by Meshbox - many thanks Mark.
•   Mini Cooper available at Ashundar.
•   The glossy finish and window reflectivity and transparency techniques from Inkydigit - many thanks Jason.
•   The Joshua tree and dried grasses from a friend.
•   The Opuntia (prickly pear) cactus from XFrog.

Render time was a little more than seven hours - mostly for the car windows.

Enjoy,

Bob

The composition is incredible, but - and I don't know exactly why - but it just doesn't look too realistic. Maybe the materials are bland? I wish I knew what to do to increase the realism  ;)

Thanks. On another site it was suggested the the gas station looks as if it is floating - possible remedy: add some bushes and trash around the structure. Maybe the gas station colors need to be subdued; or, a cloudy atmosphere ...we'll see. As I see more good crits, maybe I'll put this back in the oven.

Yeah the gas station doesn't look intergrated and polys showing around the headlights. But hey this is terragen. In comparison to the big 4 apps its still fine work.

I build my Blender models so the building foundation extends quite a way below the ground. This really helps on uneven Terragen 2 terrains.

Title: Re: Empty Pockets - improved

Here is a re-worked image hopefully improving upon the atmosphere and lighting; adding a few more plants; and, sinking the gas station lower into the soil.

It's definitely an improvement.

I like it, and its nice to see that after a while more and more non-terrain and non-plant objects come into play! And I guess its the first time I see those puple cacti ;-)

Bob...I love this. It looks a bit cartoonish...no disrespect....I love cartoons....Cars, The Incredibles, Up. Very detailed, very technical...yet, unreal....like a computer generated image of a real place. This rocks!...in so many ways....its not real but, resembles something real....a memory....a thought....yeah! I like it alot!!! Keep on man!!!
