Title: Explorers 3.0 - V5
Post by: Gannaingh on April 06, 2011, 12:33:47 AM
A long time ago I submitted an entry into the first NWDA art contest and even now it is still probably my favorite picture that I've done. I've decided to come back to it to see what I can make of it now that terragen and myself have come a long way. this is just the first draft of what will hopefully become a fatty poster on my wall ;D I think the place to start would be to reduce the noise in the water, then move onto improving the clouds in the background.

First thought was the sound when that rowing boat hit the shore  ;D Most realistic, nicely done!

My only crit would be the fog disappears abruptly in the tree area. Having said that I would buy a print.

Thanks everybody! I'll post the next iteration when school gives me a chance to work on it.

A few footprints around the landing site would be nice. At least a hint. Great composition - would sure look nice on a wall.

School hardly gives me a life anymore  :P still, I've managed to get enough time to do some work. I spent the majority of my efforts on the foreground, adding more variety in the plants and stones. I like where it's going, but it needs a ton more AA to get rid of the raggedness.

Really thats an amazing Composition, you've got most of the 12 basic rules of design in there. Very impressive, I personally cant really think of anything you don't already know to improve.

Thanks for all the kind comments! I technically had this done last night, but I apparently forgot to enable the water...floating ships looked a little weird ::) I'm really liking the near shore now, but the reeds just seem sharp to me and increasing AA or changing AA filters has not had too much of a difference, so any suggestions on that area would be appreciated. I'm going back and forth on whether I want some cumulus clouds in the upper left corner, right now I'm leaning towards no, but it just looks a bit empty without them. Thanks for looking!

Personally I would think that the clouds would be fairly distracting, at least for me. Personally I think this is just wonderful! I wish I had some of your skill :P

Can you send a little this way in that boat?

Thanks for the kind words! This is possibly the last update before I start rendering it big. I've battled back and forth on whether I should add the clouds in the upper left-hand corner but I finally decided that I wanted them, but I greatly reduced the sharpness and density of the to give them a softer and less intrusive feel. I want to play with the haze a little, to either obscure the mountain a bit more or make it more clear...I haven't decided quite yet one way or another.

Really awesome work so far :)

Did you give all your populations a bit of tilt?
I have the impression the reeds and other stuff are standing 90 degrees straight up.
If you enter a value of ~3-5 degrees for the X or Z axis in the object maker of the populator, then each instance will be tilted a couple degrees.
I think that looks more natural.

Cheers,
Martin

I hadn't thought of that TU, I'll have to get it a shot to see the results.

So I lied, and made another one. I wanted to try TU's suggestion for the reeds and it turned out well IMO. I won't promis that this is the last one before I make it big, but there is a good chance that it is  ;)

That looks most excellent, great addition with adding the river reed plants. Came out really good.
I don“t think you can push it any further without spoiling the beauty of this scenario. Its excellent!

Congratulations!
