Title: The White Tower v8 new sun position
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on April 10, 2011, 01:17:45 PM
the same tower, in a full scene.
im going to do more renders in different pov's so you can get a idea of what the area looks like....
i'm pretty happy with this piece or series..

populations/objects used:

3x nwda spruce trees (19m, 25m, 35m)
3x  nwda wild grass (pack 3)
1x mr. miley bush

also using nwda's fake stones pack as well

comments, critiques or suggestions welcome.

nice work....I really like the sense of scale here.....but what is that line running from the top of the tower??....

and also a little bit more build up at the base of the tower would help!....

the line is a laser like projectile coming from a turret towards the top
there are multiple turrets placed near the top and bottom
they dont look as good at this quality/AA/resolution

the base of the tower is actually is'nt visible, from this pov,

you can see all the turrets in action on this link-

I like this image ! Would be nice maybe to see the lower side but this image has a nice science fiction feeling!

Zaai999 because of you i want to finish my very old project that i couldn't finish (like many others :)) nearly 15 years ago.
The tower do look in a way similar , but mine isn't organic looking. In those days there wasn't programs like Terragen 2 unfortunately.

Your first pictures with the tower didn't much resonate with me. But i really like this one  :)

I'd say that you have a nice balance of trees in the image already that proportionality establish the scale of the tower and IMHO the image dose not require the addition of further trees, without impacting of the aesthetic thus-far established. This now [IMHO] -Speaking of the Image- needs objects smaller in scale grasses etc in the open areas. These things, I leave to you and your vision for you image, what I have mentioned is only offered in way of what small offerings I may give.

Regards to you.

Hi, Lane. I think that you should go back closer to the POV you had before in the tower example images, for the following reasons...

Not that this one lacks anything at all, it's really cool, but to truly appreciate the scale of this f*cker, I think it's best to see the detailing of the surface and the minuteness of everything else around it in comparison. Do you know what I mean?

I just think if some kind of everyday objects are used as a comparison then, the entire scene-render seems all the more 'BIGGER', know?
What I mean is that, if you have the tower at extremely large scale(and as the focal point, as before) then really tiny views of skyscrapers and trees and such would accentuate that all the more.

I'm not knocking this at all, though! I think this is really cool!
This is just my first idea of seeing both scenes together now. The first ones seem *MASSIVE*, this one, not so huge. Is all I mean.

Hope you get what I'm saying, it's not meant to downgrade this render at all. :)

What you actually should do, is animate this. Going from a 'normal looking' landscape with 'just a spire' to a closer look, where its immensity is truly shown. Fly underneath it, over the buildings and the viewer will fall off his chair!

Agreed! An animation would give a great "reveal".

the idea of doing a animation (or storyboard) had crossed my mind.... and this scene reminds me of Forgotten forest, from the 2010 nwda contest,
i will get to work on setting up the camera motion path as soon as i can. :)

Dark Era, The Way through the Forest, & The Wastelands of Khann are all related- geographically, i have made them to illustrate some fictional locations, regions, landmarks.. they each tell story, have a history.

the buildings in my last thread were just there for comparison, and they have no place in this scene now, and because of that i will add some structures or something around the base of the tower to make it seem a little more developed i guess.
i'm also thinking of adding some of FrankB's better grass clumps to some areas.

last night's render, currently rendering half of the animation sequence with just the tree pops enabled. ;)
(the camera fly up over the hill, and then rise up and fly back down while giving us a view of the tower)
i think will wait for TG2 64 to do a more population heavy animation

the population distribution is more to my liking in this iteration

One Windows 7 did crash last week here at home . So far no cure.
I resist to format so far . I hate to install everything every time.

I hope your files are safe , zaai999!

Ouch. A friend of mine *just* got that a couple days ago. Seems to be going around. A System Restore from the previous day seems to have handled it though, fortunately.

i have'nt had any serious problems since late 2009.

first TG2 64 render. :) its great to finally have the the 64 bit version.

this render:
it was the year 4186, the Ahtal Tuul post-tribal federation was exploring the lands north of their jungle rainforest in the south, when they sighted this massive structure, which they would call it the "skyward spires" while other races whould just call it the white tower.

its true name is unknown, the creators of this massive tower vanished over a 1000 year ago.

Looks groovy mate. Its like a spaced out "Alien" kind of spaceship has just landed, or some mysterious
object like that black square thing from 2010:A space Odyssey. Kind of makes the viewer wonder what
its all about. I personally like the weird looking tower-thingy in an Earth-like scenario. I will suggest to
not show too much of the ground part, just so to make the viewer wonder weather it might be a spaceship, or
a tower, or what-is-it (?!?!). It makes for a good conversation piece and its intriguing for the viewers to take a closer look
at the painted artwork.
I would like to also suggest to add more clouds and a sunset type of sky with deeper violet/blueish coloring to the scene.
Making the sky more dramatic and light up a bit, instead of being too dark in color. Just my idea.
Cool art and congrats on a cool scene. I enjoyed this one!

the tower is a self contained indoor city/defensive structure
some of the other users on here though it best to do animated version, and i'll point out that the camera node i'm using in TG2 has a motion path.
the animation would end at the base of tower, to get give you idea on how large this tower is. ;)

probably once i have a second computer i will animate it, i would'nt want to do right now... it would take to long.

All renders are very good Zaai999!
The last one shows the scale of the tower much more for me however .

thank you both for the comments,

i am making some changes to clouds/atmosphere, i will post some renders when they are presentable,
i will also be posting a postworked version at some point (virtual darkroom/lensflare, other effects)

its off topic but,
the spyware came back on monday... they had to take my computer away for a little while, to get it wiped.
now temporarly using the scanner computer... it seems to have some driver issues & and more processes running in the background/taskbar...
but soon i should have my computer back, with windows 7, & more more ram. :)

on the other hand my home computer is still fine.

i agree, i was happiest with the light & atmosphere on that last render.

you probably cant tell, but i am using a crater shader, along with the power fractal.

the tower isn't actually fully complete, the base, or bottom will another structure, that will rest on the ground.

Post-work without the use of GIMP or Photoshop - Ektachrome color-reversal film fliter, advanced lens flare, all done with LW 3d

SO Wonderful  :)

Can you mention the history of this tower, and where is it?
yes, it's located on a fictional planet called Sloughwhen.
it was built by a race of humanoids known the Ino, they disappeared over 1500years ago from when this render was taken ;)

i will go deeper into it's history later, a long with other info about it.

Title: White Tower v8 (new sun position)
Post by: Zairyn Arsyn on May 24, 2011, 10:49:35 AM
been distracted lately, just recently i found out from a co-worker i was eligible for free student versions Autodesk software because i work at a university funded scientific laboratory.
so now i am learning Maya 2012,
i am also trying city engine.

maya[n] 2012 hahaha

i changed the position of the sun... could easily change it back if i wanted to
should have another one out soon... something a little different, and quite large.

Perhaps more light to make the sun side of the objects pop more. It appears to be washed out. I have enjoyed this series so far.

Hey zaai,
nice image you got there, but i agree with njeneb about the lighting. Up the sun intensity just a notch. I hope "sun intensity" is called, cause I've never used terragen ^^.
I ended up on this forum because I was looking for a natural environment solution (checked vue also).

I strongly advice you to give Softimage a try also. In my opinion is a lot more straight-forward than Maya is and at least as powerful. The relatively new addition to Softimage called ICE is a monster. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do1kzR6gVYk&feature=channel_video_title

I wish you good luck in your new quest in "traditional" 3d  ;)

here is a very large (3840x5760px) render of the tower complete with labels, specs, and info.
a later version will probably feature some some cross-section drawings shower the interior of some parts.
