Title: Devonian jungle river
Post by: Dune on May 05, 2011, 02:43:20 AM
I'm getting hooked by the warper. This (simple shape) river needs some larger scale warp and more work on the water surface, so this is a WIP.

Like a flight over the Amazon where those crocs, cayman and piranha live. Now I know why people don't fish there. Great work on this one.

the population scale is perfect to me.

Nice work Ulco, like the atmosphere, pretty convincing!

Hi Ulco,

It's cool to see you're getting so much use out of the Simple shape shader :-).

Regards,

Jo

I couldn't do without it anymore, Jo! Neither with the new transform shader version.

I have to re-title this, as these trees are too old to be present when the first birds were there as well. So I replaced them with a brachiosaurus, found on the internet (credits to the unknown maker), and now wading around in a mud hole, grazing on giant ferns.
Although I liked the white birds, so I might replace all trees by modern trees.

the smaller bright green trees, 1.5 in scale, the larger tree as it is, and lots of undergrowth to produce a denser jungle

Modern version with swamp cypress. With soft shadows and all the water and reflectiveness, this took 3.5 hours to render at 0.5 and AA4.

The latest looks best. Somehow the dino did not work for me. Maybe it was the pose for the model. :-\

That looks great! Your an amazing and slick artist Dune. I admire your artsy scenarios.
This is another fine art scene, many congrats!  8)

BTW, just got a new upgrade on my PC, so hopefully I will be able to render scenes in TG2 much
faster now. These things take hours to render!!

I really like the way the river turned out. Its surface has those subtle curls of a gentle current and the riverbed in the close passage is colored so that it looks like water plants shaped by the stream. It is just a really nice effect.

Thanks for noticing that. I intended just that.

try doing a version with less transparent water. (i'd like to see that)
usually rivers that are that clear are spring fed, like 1st magitude springs or lower.

looks good to me anyways. i really like how you got the river currents to look more realistic. :)
what trees are you using for this scene?

The trees are homegrown swamp cypresses, which I have at the NWDA site.

ah, it was the bark texture that threw me off.
