Title: Dry Ice on Mars
Post by: Dune on June 09, 2011, 06:47:51 AM
Never used the lambert shader before, but it yields nice results on the ice dunes

Nice ice.

loving the ice...and a great atmo, how did you achieve this?

Nice ice (baby ;))

I think the atmo is pretty convincing too btw.
For just a little bit more interest you could try to breakup/slope-restrict the distribution of the stones.

very cool looking dry ice, i like it.

the atmosphere is good too.

Sweet.
Convincing (although I would not know one way or the other!)

Have you tried using this in a render like 'The Great Race'?

Good idea, Henry.

@TU; the slope is restricted (but not much, I agree), I also tried favor depressions, but there were hardly any rocks any more. I will work on this some more, I guess.

@Inky: easy, see image... (1 atmo, I just copied it to show both settings)

Another version with more restricted stones, another simple moon (temporarily), and Moodflows starfield background. Enhanced the dust storms a little more. C&C welcome, of course.

I KNEW there was ice on Mars!!
I didn't see it in the tire treads of an earlier image but look.. there it is.. proof !!
:P

I still prefer the first image and can't give you the reason why except for the size of the planet which I think should be smaller.

I think its the darkness in the ice in the first image compared to the latest that makes it so appealing. Somehow it looks more realistic in scale too

You might be right, guys. In the meantime I found some info on the real moons of Mars, some sizes, etc, so I will have a more reliable set of data to work with. This was all off hand.

Some real values, although I wouldn't know the distance of the moons Phobos and Deimos, so I just put them in the 'sky' somewhere. The cracks could be more subtle and warped, they're just simple voronoi now. The Viking lander won't be returning home... (COPYRIGHT AND COURTESY: Jack Higgins )

That's very cool (?) looking. The lander helps with the scale well.

excellent, maybe some LGM, next?  :) :)

What's LGM? Next one will be including a polar cap, rendering now.

sorry, it was a 'tongue in cheek' comment, LGM are 'little green men'...I am looking forward to seeing the progress...
cheers

Looks nice , Dune!
Lowering the ice high-scale ? Maybe a little artistic license and putting the Lander half in a sand dune?

If i live long enough we will see pictures from the real Viking lander maybe some day. Wonder how it looks now really!

Liking the ice, especially the little bits all broken off on the left hand side of screen there.

I think Mars has a more dense atmosphere than I depicted here, but I like the clarity somehow, and the polar cap nicely glows. It's all imagination anyway...

Only the ice is a bit weird now, might want to have another go at it.

I like this one; and, wondering if because of the high CO2 content in the atmo, whether or not some vapor mists would emanate from the ice.

It's the dust storms that lighten up above the ice, but perhaps there are no dust storms across the polar cap, but I liked to try the 'radiance of light' out.

nice atmo dune, I think that will blend well with my ALIEN project

A really gorgeous image.

Dune, what were you using for the little rocks & stuff in the foreground? They look great.

Best! D.

You need to make a moonscape, right? The basic ground is just a billowed PF, with some color fractals added after compute terrain, hardly any more displacement. The rocks near the ice are a set of fake stones on a surface layer that is set to favor depressions, and the ice is on a layer set to displacement intersection, with some ridged displacement added.
