Title: Ancient Valley (animation)
Post by: Mor on June 21, 2011, 06:17:11 AM
Upgraded to deep +animation and here comes the very first animation by me. I used my NWDA contest scene.

720x405, detail 0.65, AA 4, Oshyan's fill lights, atmo samples 18
640 frames and rendertime 7-10min per frame.

Comments and critics appreciated.

Will look at it in more detail when I'm home, but at first glance it looks pretty cool! :)
The first thing I thought when seeing Vimeo buffering was "oh I so hope these clouds move/boil" but they didn't.
Perhaps that's a nice thing to add :)
I liked the camera animation, did you do that in TG2 only?

Cheers,
Martin

Nice work with this. I was a bit concerned when I saw the clouds, but it made a nice 'entrance' into the following part of the anim.

Pretty damn impressive!

Thanks!

I thought about making the clouds moving/boiling, but left them intact, since the camera flies through them so quickly.  But yes that could be nice thing to add. Flying through the forest is another thing I might change a bit, since it is maybe a little too fast. The camera animation is TG2 only.

Thanks for the info Mor :)
I'd really like to encourage you to add just a little bit of movement/boiling of the clouds.
What works nicely is to animate the warp of the density fractal over time with a ~0.5 difference/change.
A slight move to the right/left would just give enough sense of motion.

Would you like to tell something about your rendermachine specs?
7-10/frame for 720x405 is not bad :)

Cheers,
Martin

My rendermachine is Core i7 2600 / 8 GB

I'll try adding a little warp and movement to the clouds.

Not bad at all! It felt a little bit fast but other than that it was cool!

very good, a touch too fast, maybe, but exhilarating all the same!

Thanks! I'm currently setting up second version of this, which it will be slower with moving clouds. I will also make little changes to the camera path in the forest so that the camera won't hit every tree in that forest anymore :)

New version is ready. The clouds are now animated and length increased from 640 frames to 1200 frames. I also increased detail from 0.65 to 0.7. Rendertime was about 6.5 days.

I'm total noob with video settings so what would be best video format to use?
It seems youtube packed the video quite a lot, so I will upload this to my vimeo account too.

I like this version better. YouTube did make a mess of it.

I used the QuickTime H.264 codec and Blender 2.49b to animate the image sequence on my video. YouTube was much nicer to my upload.

That's quite a nice video! Unfortunately even on Vimeo the compression ruins it. What compression codec did you use? njeneb's suggestion of h.264 is a good one.

I converted the video from uncompressed avi to mp4.

Good job

Yes this is a nice animation :)
Still the same rendersettings and rendertime?
Looking at this I get itchy as well to render an animation ;D Thanks!

Martin

Me to. I don't think my old computer would finish rendering before Terragen 4.4 is released. It's just too slow...

Stop buying brand new video cards and put (some of) the money on a non-ancient CPU/mobo instead! ;)

Really nice animation. Maybe I'd cut out that banking towards the end over the lake. How long did this take to render? It's getting close to those old TG .9 animations I remember (with much better scene quality of course). Too bad the required hardware is fairly high end.

Oh yeah how much I second this :) I'm sooooo happy with my i7-2600K...running 4.4GHz now, renders like a blaze!
(took me a long time to save money though, I can understand it's not easy to "just" by new stuff)

Next purchase I7 2600k. I have the case, mobo, DVD burner now.
Or maybe a Sinclair 1000. :o

I thought that was superb. Just upgraded to Deep Edition and haven't yet played with animation but you have inspired me!

Rendersettings were the same except detail was increased to 0.7. Rendertime was 6-12min per frame. I also used two instances of TG2 for rendering, 4 cores per instance.

17-2600k is definitely worth every cent. My old system would have rendered this animation till the end of the year :D

Btw. anyone noticed the skulls on a stone in the forest?  8)
