i've been trying for ages today toget rid of the smooth pyramidesque fake stones in my scene -- any ideas how to displace them cos using a powerfractal connected to the blender node doesnt seem to work

Do you have a .tgd file? Or a node screen shot? It would help. :)
To apply displacement, you need to apply a power fractal to the Surface Shader input, not the Blendshader input.
