Title: problem with .obj. strange holes.
Post by: ndeewolfwood on August 07, 2011, 03:47:03 PM
hi everybody.
Take a quick look on this.

(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/2433/roadsignproblem.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/roadsignproblem.jpg/)

As you can see, i have some problems with my corner.

Fig1 Fig2 Fig3 : terragen import and render.
Fig 4 : quick test render on maya (i don't have the same problem)
Fig 5 : a snapshot to check the geometry and face normal.

Any idea ?

.obj in attachements, if you have time to check.

thanks for help.

Try trippling the polys.

C'est dû au polygone. Et c'est le fait que ce soit arrondis.

I popped it into Poseray and resaved the .obj there. Poseray nearly always fixes models to work perfectly in TG2.

Here's my re-save of the .obj file, I've attached the .mtl file too but since there are no shaders included you'll need to reassign that yourself, it seems there's only one object part so, shouldn't be a problem. :)

Did it work for you when you re-applied the material, Ndeewolfwood?

You should definitely download Poseray (http://mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/), it's free and it works very well for getting problem models ready for Terragen. Usually, you just need to open the model and then re-save it and it should then work fine.

Just did it.

I find the problem why it doesnt work with maya.

Poseray triangulate mesh when import/export.

I try to triangulate my mesh into maya and it's ok now.

So,obviously objects need to be made of triangle for a terragen use.

I keep working on my spec and displace map. And i will share it.

"So,obviously objects need to be made of triangle for a terragen use."

Model in quads whenever possible. Your export will convert to tri's.

But to me it looks like this failed because Fig5, may show disconnects.
I believe there are 7 polys that are probably not welded to the rest, note the tiny triangles that overlap.

After looking again you probably just needed to weld two or four verts.

Or, just open in Poseray and select 'weld' in the groups tab. ;) Should sort all unwieldy TG discrepancies.

Ok, guys i will check that.
It's working with triangulate anyway, but it's good to know.
Thanks for your time and help.
