Title: Rakka
Post by: Mor on September 05, 2011, 03:14:12 PM
Got inspired after teaching basics of TG2 to my friend and he wanted to make a landscape from northern Finland. I decided to make one too and here's the result.

Objects used:
- Walli's pines
- Walli's dry grasses
- Walli's dry bushes
- Marc Gebharts winter birches

1920x1080 Detail 0.8, AA 6, GI 2/3, RT atmo on and super sample prepass on. Rendertime: 45min

C&C welcome

Love the marsh around the lake object/river! Could work on the light a bit, its good, but I feel like from where I am as viewer I should be able to see better... ? Then again, the light on the rocks seams bright enough. Maybe its the compression of the jpg, or is it a small render or something? Anyway, lighting is tough even with a film camera.

I think it's due to the very low light, like a fall Finland scene. A larger version posted would be nice. I like the way you see the water 'meandering' to the distance, and the calmness of the scene.

Yeah your right dune, a larger render would make everything clearer. Its a good shot, worth a longer render time.

Great render, definitely needs to be rendered larger.

excellent shot...do you have the link for the full size render?
my mistake, clicked on thumb, right clicked view image...saw in full 1920*1080...very nice!

Thanks!

Dune is right about light, the sun is quite low (elevation 18). I'll tweak the stones a bit as they became little too smooth. Any suggestions for the lighting or should I just test the current one with a huge version? :D

I was just going to say the stones need some work and probably some color variations.
Also I would up the exposure two tads.

It would be a great step to have some really fancy and detailed, feathering cirrus going on in the sky, too :)
the latter ain't easy.

Cheers,
Frank

Here's new version with most work on stones and I'm happy with them now. Also little more exposure and red sky decay. Same size, same detail, same rendertime 47min :)

I'll give it a try. Any suggestions how? :D

Much better, for some reason the trees bother me perhaps another specis or greater variation in size. I really like this render worth going the extra mile.

Some more variation of tree species would be very good in this. This is coming along great.

Here's what I would call final version, at least it is very difficult for me to improve it. Tree populations had a little problem ("population outside area") and therefore only one kind of trees were close to camera and others stayed nicely within defined borders. :) Now there is 4 different populations of pines and 2 populations of winter birches.

Also added dandelO's cirrocumulus clouds.

What you think? Is it ready for a larger render? :)

Nice composition and integration of libraries (trees, clouds)

Quote("population outside area")
If that is a problem, blend the population by a simple shape shader defining the area you want. Or use a distance shader, or painted shader...

That was problem only when I didn't notice it :) Used painted shader.

Here's 4000x2250 version: http://www.melnworld.com/tg2/rakka3%20large.jpg

I also plan on making some kind of time lapse animation of this :)

Your quest for realism has reached it's point ...very impressive.

An absolute stunner at this size, Mor. It shows so much better than the smaller size. One minor thing; a few fake stones have flat tops, but it seems hard to not have at least some, and I still wonder why that is.
What is the heather bush, did you make it, is it XFrog?

Yes I noticed the stones and as you say there almost always seems to be some of them so I didn't even try to get rid of them, because I was happy how all other stones settled. That "heather" is a combination of three different populations of Walli's dry bushes and one population of leafless bush from terragen.org. I've always wanted to get descent heather object as it would be very usefull for undergrowth.

Its very very good. Love the way you have managed he transitions between scrub, bush, rocks. Very nice indeed.
Only weak point for me is the small population of tree samples, which allows you to see that they are rotated copies of each other.
IMHO this lack of diversity in tree populations is bothersome and something I would like to try to fix (in general).

A friend once told me that setting the rotation at 351 works out better than 360; also, some have suggested that setting some 'tilt' to the population by working with the X and Z could yield better results.

There will be an interesting feature in the next build regarding rotation....

Ulco, features that are in alpha testing won't always be included in the next public release.

Sorry Matt, I'll keep my mouth shut from now on.
