Trying to figure out the shadows -- I see the sun setting (or rising) but see those shadows in the middle left and right. And the brightness above....

I dont think so. Look at the water. Also, why would anyone do that? It would take forever and you would just end up with about the same thing. The light in question is most likely just reflected from a surface out of view of the lens. That it looks the way it does says the photographer simply used a large number of closely bracketed exposures, more than 6-8 I'd guess. (Just what I think).
