Title: Coastal railway
Post by: Dune on October 05, 2011, 02:15:22 AM
This started out as a test for a hillside road as the title suggests, but ended up as a coastal railway. Shit happens  ;) Perhaps I will make a wall on the left, as I am not very pleased with it yet, and the grasses are not good enough. Any other comments are welcome, of course. Perhaps some more mist/haze....

Hi Dune, as someone into railways, one comment would be that the curves may be a little tight - unless we are talking about a branch line which only has small engines running on it! The stones all seem to have got wet - including the higher stones (above track level) which would indicate the line line floods regularly :) The sort of vegetation next to a railway would be thistles, brambles and small trees (which the railway would eventually cut down). Love the idea of the scene and wonder how you managed to lay the track! Jonathan.

You're right about the track; it's supposed to be some small branch line (or I would have added another set of rails). The higher wetness I just added to give the moss on the large stones some glistening, as if they are wet from sea mist. But you're right, I might get that off. I'll see if I have some other veggies. The track is a series of repeated and mixed simple shapes and masks.

bring in to land more, make straighter and raise it some to be more real, then good picture.

When you say the track is made up of simple masks, you might as well talk rocket science! Martin has posted (in the support section under my topic re: render camera issues) that he is putting together a load of FAQs, videos and tutorials to help newbies like me - but needs someone good at website design.....just thought I'd mention it in case you knew anyone :). P.S You could do with a nice model of a GWR Pannier Tank to go with the goods van...which someone very carelessly left on the line ;)

Some more rocket science then: if you take an SSS, make it a line, and warp this by a redirect, PF and warp shader, you have a warped line. Double this, and add a similarly warped set of horizontal stripes (Y-repeated grayscale image map). That's the basics. Up to you to make it work together and refine.

@TheOne: Thanks, but if I take it more to land, you can't see all features well enough in a small render. This is more to make a lot of different features work together than it is meant to be real. You might see it as an old side track that is slowly giving way to higher tides, due to warming up of the planet...

I might add an old signpost, overgrown by ivy, but I have to make that yet.

Some other settings.

Ok, you are right. To make more real it not be same picture. Is good composition as is. Everyone seems to be focus on make real. I like. As for rocket science, is most simple science: explosion in container has one way out, in opposite direction is pushing forward. not hard to see :)

Hi Dune - love this last image (and the signal!). It looks more natural now, and I can see this looking like a lakeside railway. I will try the SSS stuff when I have finished my current project. Still needs a locomotive though ;)

The last one I like, Ulco. However if you are still taking suggestions, try reducing the saturation, particularly on the grasses.

Cheers;
Frank

You're right, Frank. I got a spanking from my wife for making it too green! Already changed it.

This one took about 5 hours, due to the tiny displacement of the mosses on the rocks. But I'm still not happy with the lighting. It's a bit difficult as you're looking towards the sun at 18 degrees high. I might do another one.

Already nice improvements compared to the first one.

You may have to use ambient occlusion for fill lighting. I have done many renders with low angle sunlight. When the sun is in the camera viewpoint, lighting a scene is very difficult.

The scene is starting to really come together - the mud flats are fantastic, the stones are looking a lot better, and I love the creeper on the signal....looking like the last days of BR where things looked unkempt. The lighting works for me....45 moniutes or so before dusk :)

Hi Dune - after you excelled yourself with the wet line on my beach rock, and not yet having Martins to be published TG help, would it be possible to see the TGD so I can investigate successfully using the SSS to produce the rails? Jonathan.

Beautiful as always, with great details.  The shiny beach area and water are perfect.  The only bit I don't care for as much is the bright greens in the distance around the bend.

Sorry, Jonathan, but there are tgd's which I'd rather keep to myself. With the hints and tgd's provided in this and other threads regarding roads and such, it would be possible to find out. If you can warp a narrow simple shape line, you can double that with a transform shader, or just add another line at 1.35m from the first. You'd have to make a mask for the sleepers, and one for the attachment (nuts+plate), which can be used with the same warper. Every bit can be merged (added or differenced...), and used for a color input and/or displacement.

I know about the greens. I'm always told I use too hard greens. Anyway, here's another one, probably final, as I'm getting fed up with it now. Up to something else.

I like this latest render best. Your greens seem over saturated; I have seen the bright greens you like after rain storms or in spring.

Bravo, so lovely! Great coast and of course seeing the railway in a render makes my heart jump. Thankfully, you keep returning to this theme :) You always have a way of putting together just the right combination of objects to make a scene interesting and non-repetitive. It's got to do with object placement, too.

Great work! Last version is spot on, excellent textures on the rocks, moss, grass and mud.

One more then, with the sun not opposite, but to the right. Easier lighting, but now I don't like the amount and size of glistening. Maybe redo that area. Also decreased the greenness a bit more.

Hi Dune - no problem! The last two renders are great. It has all come together very nicely! J

I think this is near perfect now. I like this! The shore is amazing!

That is the kind of scene I can only dream of putting together - LOVE the shoreline - reminds me of some of the salt-marsh areas further down the beach at home. Beautiful render.  :)

Thanks, guys. Perhaps I'll do another one, with different sun angle and a (dirt) road instead of the rocks.

The inter-tidal zone (right half of the picture) is superb, either lighting approach works for me, both look nice. The birds, especially in the distance, are a nice, subtle touch. The left half of the picture however seems a bit less engaging, more "flat". Maybe needs more color variation in object textures? I know that's something you can definitely do. ;D

Looking good. The veggie color variation is an improvement I think. The plovers are unfortunately a bit dark, and their addition makes things a bit "busy" looking over there where it seemed quite peaceful before. But they are not a bad addition.

This point of view and composition is a knockout. The plovers seem a bit dark; but, that is due to the lighting and their darker color.

I cant take my eyes off the shore. Everything else is great too. That shore and the light are really catching me though.

I really like the shoreline also. It is hard to have a 'best' part of this one though.

Thanks, guys. The grasses, mhaze, are three homegrown types, just very plain actually. I agree about the darkness of the birds, but that's often the frustrating thing when birdwatching against the sun glitter, trying to identify species or the rare vagrant. I'll rename this one 'Birdwatcher's Nightmare'.
