First iteration. If anyone wants to know: rocks on a twisted/sheared rock outcrop redirected by a set of very stretched PF's, angled by 90 degrees with a transform shader. Same principle as the procedural fields.
Great image, very grand :) I like the virtical cliff. The only way I have managed this is with a redirected Twist and sheer shader. I'm curious about what you mean by " ... twisted/sheared rock outcrop redirected by a set of very stretched PF's, angled by 90 degrees with a transform shader", the last part, angled by 90 degrees with a transform shader, can you explain further.
Cheers

cool render ulco :)
great job with the displacements along the cliff
though i would prefer a more greyish rock like texture.
the vegiation looks good too, what model are you using for those bushes?
I think he ran into the hard edge you can get using the 'coastal adjust' (?) in the displacement tab. Sometimes you can get long 'polygons' running vertically. They will not subdivide properly for further displacement.
By rotating the surface, Ulco avoided this problem. Brilliant!
Slightly better.
@Henry: no this is a plain perlin terrain, where I twisted one hill to get a cliff. At the same spot (here it comes, Richard) I used two stark billowed and stretched (70x on the Z) PF's, mixed in a merge shader set to difference (I think, but you can play that and see what happens), warped that a bit, and added some more displacement here and there. Used this to redirect X,Y,Z in different strengths.
I just came back from the dentist, who had a book in the waiting room with nice cliff colors from Spitsbergen. I'll make some changes.
The bush is just one pop of pinus nigra bushes (I knew whose they were, but can't think of his name, right now).
Nice work again Ulco.
I like the first one much better though, since the bushes have nicer distribution and the boat is a bit more closeup which gives it a better composition in my eyes.
Really like the bushes in the original. The way they cover the hillside is beautiful.
"The cliffs of insanity!!"
:D
I like the first one more too. But here are so many possibility's. Lovely!
Not sure if it would look better but i would make the ship texture just a little bit more outstanding from the background. But not much.
Curious how this will look in the end , Dune :)
I messed up the cliffs and the distribution of the bushes (Lighting's). Overwritten the file, how stupid can you (I) be. Well, it was a test, anyway. As ever.
so... you haul cargo off boat and go up that hill with it? I think dock would be in flatter area. :)
Changed the coloring and structure of the rock face.
Very good, Ulco!
the only thing that disturbs the image slightly is the bright line along the shore, which looks out of place. Other than that, beautiful!
Cheers,
Frank
Fantastic image. Looks like a snap shot in History when pirates ruled the waves :P Fantastic!
great cliff structure!
I think this latest render is he best yet. The line Frank mentions is a little off... But it could be a dry area of the shore.
Very nice, love the cliffs and the silent mood. Great! I am not really sure about the sunlight though, I think this is something that could be improved.
I'm liking the latest image a lot as well. The ship looks incomplete though? Is it supposed to be a wreck? If not it needs rigging, sails...?

I made the ship for the Vlaardingen commission http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=9792.0 (http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=9792.0), so it's just a hull being worked on in a shipyard. I could add some stuff maybe if I have some time (and inclination).
I agree about the waterline. But as always, I was testing this rock formation, added some stuff, but never réally worked it all out, getting lured away by another idea (plovers...).
The last image is striking and inspirational; yet, I still like the look of the bushes population in the first render.
Any chance of seeing your node view on this?
Sure, but it won't help much I'm afraid. Some nodes are inside nodes.
Edit: one more then inside the redirected wall node
Thanks - Oh good, I was expecting something difficult. Before you posted this, I started a project trying your earlier verbal description as a guide to come up with that amazing vertical wall. Hopefully, by the time you reach my age I may have had some success with this ...LOL.
This has very nice fantasy feel to me. The cliffs are sweet.
