Title: Moonlit Night
Post by: Jonathan on October 28, 2011, 10:55:38 AM
Well, as everyone seems to be jumping on the Hallow'een bandwagon, I thought I'd do a simple moony type scene. Thanks to Yossam for the moon, Wallis dry bushes and some Xfrog trees....

same here i will have a halloween render out soon ;)

i like this except for the banding on the nightsky.
the moon texture looks good, nice use of ground cover/bushes

This is quite nice, Jonathan. I think the translucency on the leaves is a bit much for moonlight visibility, though. The Moon also seems to be lying on her back, how did you map the surface? If it's a spherical map, you can rotate it with the transform shader to face the right direction. :)

I must admit I just loaded Yossams moon and didn't think to check it was facing the right way :) Will lessen the transparency and take a look at the moon to give a more realistic view. I agree the cloud is a bit thick and needs making less dense....more sort of whispy! Will try to do this weekend :)

And raise the moon a bit to get it hovering. Now it's just like a ball in the grass.

Here goes...translucency reduced, moon in a better position and about 90% correct regarding rotation :)

Very nice; one more thing - since the moon is close to the horizon, add a touch of yellow ...in and around large cities, the rising moon usually displays a yellow to yellow/orange tint.

That's a great tip. Will give it a go :)

Jonathan nice image :)

But i have a feeling that your monitor has too dark settings.
This is very common and my monitor isn't the best callibrated ones too.
Look at the links below. There are probably many better sites about this.

Take a look and if this is not a problem like i think forget it   ;)

http://baranik.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/test-chart2.gif
I think on your monitor you can not see the 3 at all on the black left side.
I can barely see the 2 on the right side for example.

On my monitor 0%  and %100 white is right ...
Be carefulll some things do only count for older CRT monitors here on this link.

But this looks like a generally better page for adjustements.
http://www.galacticmag.com/monitor/adjusting-brightness-and-contrast_o1.html
And it looks like i should callibrate my monitor ones again after seeing this page :)

We have 3 PC's here at home and trust me the images do look very different on all of them.

Cheers.

Hi Kadri, ran the chart in your link and my monitor seems well calibrated - so I wondered why you thought it wasn't? Was the image I created too bright? :) My monitor is an HD LCD monitor, about a year old so it should be ok....

Yes it looked a little too bright . But if it is OK for you there is no problem of course :)

Hi all, final render - struggled to get a nice yellowy finish on the moon....possibly not doing it right....played around with the colours in the Parts Shader (Translucency_ but only got an "old moon" colour.....also darkened the final image :)
