I started on some waterfalls to try to get the principle working. The terrain needs more work of course, and the placement of the falls is quite crucial and dependent upon the shape of the terrain. Will be continued...
Rather promising. What's your technique?
- Oshyan
A couple of simple shapes, and 2 water shaders (one for vertical parts with stretched foam and one for horizontal parts), but on the same rivers. The water takes the same shape as the terrain, so to speak. The river needs to be less canal like, and the rock wall needs more 'bump' and nicer strata. I will also try to warp the outcrop and strata shader, or just use stretched PF's for it, or the blue node thing that was in the forum some time ago.
That's looking very promising Ulco ;D
Is this for our collab? ;)

If it is for our collab then don't worry too much about the rocks and strata and such. I like doing those :)
Unless you have something else in mind for me!
Cheers,

Hi Dune,
This looks to be a great start! One of the first things I wanted to do when getting TG2 was something like what you have here. But I read in the forums some place that it was pointless to try. Guess not 8) I did find a Tutorial on using clouds to make a fall, perhaps you can use it to add mist to your falling waters? Anyway, If you master this don't hold back on a Tutorial, I think just about everyone would want to see that.
Was typing when T-U was.... If you two are working together then I say go big (victoria falls big) and make the falls animated ;D
@ Martin: I'll be glad to send you the files as soon as I have it like I want it. Then you can go loose (it was indeed started as a start of our collab). But in the end, I will probably put this basic technique on NWDA (I must have something now, don't I? ;-), so I should at least have something worthwhile by myself.
@ TheBadger: I know about the cloud technique, and I was indeed planning some vapor at the falls base. And Niagara size... no problem with this technique.
Send me about a liter of your creative juices ...man, this is a great project ...looking extra fine so far.
An update, but run at too high specs, so I cut him off. Mistakes anyway, such as rock pocking through the two right falls (I know why), not very nice soil and the rock face could do a little easier on botox. I need to change the trees as well. It'll be perfect (and more so if Martin is going to get to it).
I'm going to get it? :)
Awesome!
I already have some ideas!

Just saying ;D
Impressive start.
The top edge opf the falls bothers me - this is generally very white where the light falls on it not black. I also find the falls too streaky and lacking in bulk.
Mick
Noted and I already changed the foam distribution. Nice examples, although some are not my kind of thing. Especially the last two must be possible... with a little refinement. Wait and see what comes out next.
:o 8)
looking really good so far....
:)
Getting better, but I haven't got it yet. The problem is that the falling water can't 'see' the rocks at the water's edges. It might be solvable...
Great stuff, Ulco! Keep it coming... :)
I'm still impressed with the second iteration. This is a close POV of the falls. You might have less to contend with at a more distant view. I like the tree population in the third iteration - they look more in scale.
Impressing !!!
Next one, and the next will be different again. Have to take a small mistake out though... wrong refraction index :-\
This is the one with the wrong refraction index, but I already fixed it.
This is fantastic. You come up with those things in nature that seem impossible for TG2 like water spouts, tornadoes, smoke, etc, and .etc. Nice work here Ulco.
I am loving these so far and would be stoked to see a tutorial when you pin it down just right!
I'll probably make a set for NWDA, to at least get a little reward for the countless hours spending to refine this, while others sit in their offices and make money ;) I'm happy to help and give a little stuff now and then, but not everything. I hope you guys understand.
Anyway, the refraction change helped a lot, but the bending of the water plane still throws some unwanted shadows, where the light is passing through displaced water. Can't be helped, I'm afraid, until we get grayscale transparency.
Very well done !
would it be possible to do a small animation of these waterfalls ?
Looking the best so far. One thing; looking at falls, one may notice a few lateral outcrops of water caused by rock obstructions, higher water volume striking against itself; or, caused by wind - maybe a combination of all those things. This is usually seen about 2/3 the way down the water path mixing with the spray of water at the base. Maybe I'm asking for too much?
You may be asking for too much, Bob. If I would add rock like displacements in the fall, the water tends to follow that displacement, and curls back. The only way to do that is to add very stretched outcrops which have to start at the bottom and reach up to several heights, if you get my point. Perhaps it can be done by using a blended distribution or distance shader and these stretched billows or perlins...
Thanks for your explanation Ulco. One of the possibilities with this could be cascading falls where the water reaches a level; flattens to a river and once again begins to fall - like reaching another strata and creating multiple falls. Great stuff you've generated here.
