Title: Exporting and importing to BMP supported?
Post by: redstamp on April 01, 2012, 06:34:57 AM
Does anyone know if Terragen 2 supports the export and re-import of landscapes and layers in Terragen 2, similar to the functions in Tarragen Classic?

Trying to find out how to create a crop circle and / or white horse image(s) in Terragen 2.

Any help appreciated.

Just search "BMP" in the search tab above. There are a lot of threads on this subject.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking about as there seem to be a couple of things you might be referring to.

Terragen 2 can load and save TER format terrains when the terrain is in a heightfield format (heightfield shaders in TG2). You can save by right-clicking the node and choosing Save As. This does not have anything to do with texturing however (the same was true in TG Classic though).

To create a crop circle and/or other image on the terrain, you would actually use an Image Map Shader. You can add this on the Shaders tab at the top of the node list on the left. When you add it, it will ask you to specify an image. You would need to create the image in a separate program (e.g. Photoshop). You could use either Through Camera projection or Plan Y projection. I would suggest trying the latter first. Make sure you set the size to something reasonably large, it's measured in meters. Setting things up this way will simply apply the image directly to the terrain. If you instead want to "mask" another texture layer, or even a population (of objects), you can add the Image Map Shader as the Blend Shader input of the shader you want to "mask".

You can also load images as heightfields, if you want to use them as elevation data. The Image Map Shader can create displacement, thus creating a terrain, but you can also load it into a heightfield if you prefer to work with those. Simply use the "Add Terrain" button, select "Heightfield Load", and you can choose an image. Many common image formats are supported, even if they don't show up in the list of file types. Change the file type to "all files" so that you see all your files.
