Title: World Machine Not Dead!
Post by: The Geostation on April 28, 2007, 06:36:16 PM
Hi all, just to show that all is not forgotten with World Machine (still a fantastic piece of software, particularly when combined with TG2) - here's a rendering taken from a heightfield map made in World Machine.

Bushes were added, along with stones on the waters' edge.   Hope you like the final effect  :)

All the best,

Andrew

Yeah.  Nice.  I like what you're doing here and have been trying similar work with Bryce.

Thanks Calico, I remember you've done some very nice terrains (one named something like "Aridas") with WM too.

Best regards,

Andrew

Nice job.  I can't wait until Matt can figure out some way to apply erosion to procedurals.

Hi old_blaggard,

Funny you mentioned that, as I was thinking about that very thing the other day.   However the thought was how difficult it could be  :'(  It would probably be almost impossible to do unless it somehow performs the erosion within the camera's field of view, and performs less detailed erosion further away from the camera.

Best regards,

Andrew

As far as I've gathered, it would be very difficult to apply the erosion over the entire terrain, with almost infinite detail.  I'm guessing that the only way to do that would be to limit it the camera's field of view, and then only go so far with the erosion as the detail settings and size would allow it to be seen.

very nice work here....I like your trees....and very nice rock formations....

I am still learning WM and its not easy learning the program like WM on your own....

To help, the river macros for WM can be found here: http://www.terranuts.com/index.php?page=river_terrains

It can take a little time to get the hang of WM, however the learning curve is fun and not too steep.   I have found that experimentation in WM is quickly rewarded with useful results, even if they are not quite what I initially set out to do.

Also the small preview isn't always representative of how well a heightfield will turn out.   A quick 1024x1024 build will usually give a more definitive feel of the results.   Overall scale is also a big factor, sometimes a heightfield can be vastly improved by reducing its height.

Hope this helps.   If you have any particular issues with WM then feel free to ask in this thread.

All the best,

Andrew
