Title: Bryce Trees?
Post by: Blalack77 on June 07, 2012, 06:44:44 PM
I exported trees from Bryce and opened them with Terragen 2.  I got a few errors saying: "texture vertices out of bounds" and "couldn't open mtllib".  After I populated them they were barely sticking above the ground surface.  Whats up with this?  Anyone know a fix?  Is there a better program than Bryce to make trees that is still easy to use?

First, are you exporting the trees from Bryce as ".obj"?

It look like Bryce builds the tree with the vertical zero point as the midpoint of the tree.  I like to use Lightwave on the obj model and set the tree to zero in the y axis with a simple press of F3 and choosing the y axis (Bryce tress will have to be lowered a little more so the roots are below the ground.)

I then save it as a Lightwave object (lwo) and import it into Poseray.  If you search "Poseray" in this forum, you will find several  threads covering this free application.  With Poseray you can correct most mesh problems.

Poseray can also save the material (in this case images) along with the mesh to a folder, which is convenient.

I didn't have the time to mess with the texturing, but a quick load into TG2 gave no errors and it positioned the tree to the ground.

Here's a quick render of a Bryce tree in TG2:

It's supposed to be an acacia.

cool...that didn't use to work all that well but I see there's changes in the export dialogue from last time I tried a few versions ago....

Bobby, I should have mentioned I used my own images for the texture.  The one's exported by Bryce looked very dark -- probably a setting I missed in the TG2 parts shader.

check my free trees thread I just started...I as well use my own image maps...thanks again for the head's up on this....

I just made a post about Blender trees.  I'm going to try to attach a file.  If you can see it, whats up with this?

looks like it needs running through PoseRay to assign the textures...check this forum for tips on using PoseRay or ask if you can't figure it out but it's an easy to use free app....get it here

I spent a little time trying a Bryce tree population and some Bryce rocks.  It is a fast and easy way to make your own trees for TG2 (not saying they would be good as a "centerpiece tree".)
