Still watching the tutorial posted in the wiki (http://planetside.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16:tg2-with-max-and-maya&catid=14:help). Early in the tutorial it showed how to export height map out into lightwave files. Then suddenly about 2/3 the terrain was already inside Maya. How it got in there was skipped completely :O I'm not sure but as far as I know, Maya cannot import lightwave files. Is there any other way to convert the lwo to obj? Or any way to export height map as black and white image?
That tutorial is so outdated that it actually should be removed. The LWO exporter ran obsolete since the introduction of the 'micro exporter'.

Thanks again Tangled-Universe :D I see there's an export exr too. Does that one saves out height field?
Yes, you can save heightfields to EXR by right-clicking a heightfield node and choosing Save As.

Hey, Oshyan, why would I want to save a heightfield to EXR?

Because it's more broadly supported than TER and preserves full accuracy, unlike TIFF and other 8 bit output formats.
