Title: Alpine Meadow
Post by: pclavett on October 06, 2012, 08:40:55 AM
Hi all !
Have been working much less than previously in the last 4 months and have been experimenting a lot more with Terragen and thanks to the Terragen Forum and Community have learned quite a few things. The Forum is amazing in the fact that its members are extremely helpful with their hints and suggestions and also quite generous in sharing their work and files for us to learn. Dissecting clips and tgd's does go a long way into learning how Terragen works and for all those starting with Terragen you are invited to do this exercise as it will take you a long way into learning the intricate ways of doing things with this software. In this image there is a clip from DandelO's library, that is his Planetary GrassShader for the distant grass areas. I have found no better way to represent to show large areas of grass !!! Thanks man ! Otherwise the rest is homegrown Terragen with the 3 terrains conceived with GeoControl2 and modified with Powerfractals and other displacement shaders. The vegetation otherwise is from the XFrogs collection of tgo's, some of them modified with the XFrogs software which by the way runs perfectly on a Mac through Parallels Desktop. I thanks all of you that have shared their ideas and works for us to learn and wish you a great day !

Thanks Kadri and looking back at the picture I noticed a few problems.....sorry for not repairing those few spikes on the left mountain range.....by the way am I the only one that gets these few spikes that appear sometimes and instead of trying to trying to find the problem....simply photoshop it out ??? Is that considered cheating in Terragen ???

Personal opinion: if you can make it work for you and it suits your needs, there is no"cheating" in  Terragen.

Quite an incredible image, perfect POV and terrain. I think there is room to work on the surface of the mountains - I would be inclined to make the underlying rock a darker, almost black colour. Also the vegetation could have a bit more translucency, increased quality. I think there is room to make this a classic!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions....agree that that mountains could be darkened and improved and will work on this. Also just recently became aware of the importance of adjusting colors for the vegetation and certainly will work on this . Again thanks and appreciate the suggestions.

Looks good to me too. The only thing I am worried about is the transition from green to snow at the tree line in the hills on the background (right side)
Would the transition be that crisp? What is the source image?

I should probably have lowered the treeline and grassline where it meets with the grayrock layer just below the snow....so some tweaks to be done there....but note that the distance will blur some of these contrasting textures. Still will go back and do some tweaks...but note that I have a 4000 pixel wide version cooking right now of the first with more detail and will post it when done....and then will tweak as discussed. Thanks to all for the suggestions..it is a learning experience ! Have a good day !

Here is the final render at 4000 x 1600 with Detail at 0.8 and AA at 0.7. Took about 24-30 hours on 2 computers.....one actually crashed and had to be restarted ! Will do some of the changes suggested in the coming week and post the new version in about a week. Thanks all for the help and suggestions. Have a great day !

Impressive image. Reminds me of my youth climbing in the alps or rather resting between climbs!

It's beautiful! Great how the snow is really almost blindingly bright, as if it's glowing somehow.
