Good work. If you're thinking about what to do next, I might be tempted to play around with the bark texture a little more. Maybe turn off raytrace objects, and get some displacement in the texture to give you better shadows. And possibly but a bit more contrast into the bark image map.

Agreed. And maybe a little more going on on the floor, like some clumps of grass, or moss covered tree stumps, branches, maybe even some shrooms. The lighting is nice and photographic.

Added some shrooms, and more debris to the mix. Also changed the lighting a little bit. Tried to work on the bark texture some, but there is not much hope for it.

Sorry a brain dump...

The sun looked better in the original. It was casting interesting hot spots on the opposite tree trunks, as well as providing a warm damp glow in the atmosphere, like a dewy morning.

The first ground texture I think is better, although your second could be mixed in small intervals to give some general floor variety. Saying that, I didn't really have a problem with the first

The sparce bracken oranges of last years growth with the smaller green shoots looked like early spring in the first.

I'd be tempted to make those mushrooms a much smaller detail. That and the sun are stopping me wandering what's over the brow of the rise. I think they could be something you only notice when you spend some time studying the image. Maybe off to the left and only a few of them. A  2:1 aspect ratio might give you more floor space to 'easter egg' subtle objects, but for me the main story is the mystery beyond the edge of the wood.

Don't give up on that bark texture. That will be the detail that makes this photoreal imo. Give me a pm and I'll have a look at it if you're stuck.

You might want to try a render without RTO, see how the bark comes out. Probably much better, but you'd have to take care of the fern's quality then. Higher detail would be necessary (also of the objects, I think). I agree with Jon (Hetzen) about the better lighting in the first iteration.

Nice scene!Maybe you can add some more under-vegetation like grasses, snags...
