Poll
Question:
Who feels up for another NWDA (Still) image contest?
Option 1: I'm in
votes: 29
Option 2: I'm out
votes: 0
Hey guys,
check out this quick poll and cast a vote!
Frank
about time... ;)
hav you come up with any idea for a theme?
I have a few ideas but not decided yet... ;)
alright, figured it was too early for that.
look forward to ideas.
For sure!
sounds like a great idea!
:)
:o how's the thread read 42 times and just 7 votes? Come on people! ;-)
^^ People will read it this week, and vote next week. Logging in is a lot of work! ;) jk Frank. I voted. I would like to participate now that I can at least get close to making the scenes I wanted when I got terragen.
I'm sure you'll get a lot of YES. Good idea, Frank.
Yes!
Depends some on the theme, but I will vote yes. Have not been doing much TG2 so perhaps it would be good kick! Bill
ok, so far so good. I will consider to start another contest once we cross the line of 30 people voting "I'm in" ;-)
You may have noticed there is no "maybe" choice ;-P
Keep voting! I promise this will be a very interesting theme you don't want to miss.
Frank
I thought many more people would want to participate than the current 20 :-\ Makes me wonder how many people actually use TG2 in a more or less regular way, either professionally or as a 'hobby'.
http://challenge.cgsociety.org/ten/view_entries#jumpto
More then 450 entries and not all of them finished as it looks...
Ulco if you think about all the 3D software around and the awards there i think there isn't much to be worried about.
Ah, there is nothing to worry! It's all fun and we get 30 participants, I am sure! ;)
Theme suggestion: Freestyle; although hard to make choices and comparisons when voting.
Five days left and still seven participants needed. Come on, you sissies!!! ;) ;) ;)
Btw, I'd like to have a more specific theme. Freestyle can be everything. I want a challenge!!! ;D
I won't promise anything, but I know Frank has a nice theme in his head ;)
Agree with Hannes!
Creativity often comes with limited choices. How about a challenge that limits us in some way, forcing us to find an original solution.
Maybe the entire scene can only use a specific number or maximum number of shaders.
or
Maybe their is a supplied terrain that has to be textures and lit.
or
Limit the colour pallet in some way, you may only use blues and orange for the ground textures.
or
Do what you like but the sunlight is green!
Just an idea but I think with the talent here we might come up with some novel, interesting and educational solutions.
Cheers
Richard
If you want more participants i would only choose a subject like "mountains in winter" etc. and not restrict it too much.
In a way you're right Richard, but my concern and opinion is that if you put restrictions in the contest challenge like max shaders and such then you'll only attract about a handful of contestants who can cope with such a challenge.
What Frank has in mind isn't very restricting. The theme will be a certain subject, so we'll restrict you to that, but you can put this in any kind of landscape you like.
This will allow for both a challenge as well as allowing a contestant to use his previous experience and favorite elements/strengths in his work.
I hope this doesn't sound too vague, but I don't want to spoil Frank's idea for the contest by throwing it in here :)
We just need a couple more votes! ;)
Cheers,
Martin
A waterfall? A.... cave? A..... crater? A..... outcrop of rock? Or just a specified object? Curious.....
My only request is please wait till the 2.5 release of the free edition so the po' folk (me etc.) could join in with a minimal handicap(size/res/pop)....
will have a go
6 more!
Come on guys! ;D
I'll support the contest like I did last time by publishing the winner's work and bio in my ezine (http://plugsandpixels.com/ezine.html) (see issue #18).
Well, hopefully that'll convince the last three contestants to enter :-\ I am quite amazed about the lack of response to this contest proposal, really >:(
Perhaps some are a bit reluctant because they are afraid it will be as comprehensive as last one (animation storyboard challenge)?
I can tell, without saying specifically, that all the candidate themes are about still images :)
So... because not everyone is checking the forums often, and because it's relatively easy to miss a thread, I have opened the voting for another 10 days.
The contest themes in question are indeed about creating a still image - so no story boards or animations.
What's different this time around is the method by which the winner is chosen. In the past years, we had a jury, but this time, we would like to open the voting process up to the forum users. On top of that, we may have 2 voting categories, like "most photo real" and "most interesting", so that we would have 2 second place winners and 1 first place winner. The first place winner would be the one with the highest combined score from the two categories.
Well, still thinking about it, how that might work out or not, but I wanted to share this with you anyway, perhaps to spark your interest.
So if you would like to participate, VOTE NOW, if you haven't already.
Cheers
Frank
The problem with 'photo real' is that it's hard for free TG2 users to have a fair chance. Perhaps that could be another category?
The voting is a good idea, but I wouldn't ask people to get all '30' in line, but give the three best their respective number, or just the best of each category one vote. But how would you restrict the voting per person? I could easily vote 10 times for one of the images (my own ;))...
"Photo real" is definitely the prime category, when we talk about Terragen. You can make pretty photo real images with the free version, you just have to choose a scene that is not so much affected by the free version limitations. For example, don't create a scene that relies on a big variety in populations.
The contest theme will allow for that kind of flexibility.
Frankly, TG2 is all about photo real, so that category is a must.
In all honesty, we don't want to limit the scope of the contest based on free or not free edition. We just want to honor the best image, whatever it takes.
About the voting system, we still have to figure that out in detail. Our initial thought is to allow one vote per category, which makes it simple. Most likely a normal survey could provide that functionality. Once we decide to let people vote, there is always a possibility of cheating, which we will surely attempt to prevent, but there is no guarantee of success - that's a risk we would take. After all, this is for FUN and not something really serious.
We think the benefit of letting everyone participate in the outcome outweighs the cheating risk. It sure would be an experiment, as we have never done that before.
In the end, IF there are serious problems that we can't overcome with a public voting, we can still resort back to a jury model.
I think this is all probably secondary, as the actual act of contesting in creativity and skill should be the primary motivator for participating. The past NWDA contests have created some of the top community experiences on these forums in the past. That's what counts! :-)
Cheers,
Frank
Agree. Hopefully some more contestants will appear out of the dark and unfathomable depths of TG2 users... Any idea about prizes yet? That might pull people across the line...
hmm, no idea about the prizes, yet. Rember, we're just about whether we launch a new contest or not. No reason to talk to possible sponsors just yet :-)
I'm sure we'll have attractive prizes eventually, as always!
Cheers,
Frank
I prefer a jury model with clear guidelines that the jury will follow to make their decisions. I have given up on democracy.
29
Are you 29, Jon? Then, good that you're in! Now who's going to be number 30?
So, 29 is not 30, but I guess it's close enough.
We'll begin to work out the details for the contest and be back with the full announcement soon. :)
Looking forward to this!
Frank
I'll take spot 30 ;D
