Hi all, I am new to this forum and also fairly new to terragen 2. I'm trying to make some realistic looking planets and I'm having some trouble getting any satisfying results. Basically what I have done is just added some surface layers with different altitude constraints and slope settings for the coloration. This has not come out that great so I was hoping to get some helpful advice from some other terragen 2 users. I am just not really too sure what kind of shaders to use or anything for that matter, too get a more realistic looking planet.
I am going to attach a pic so that you can see what I have so far and I will also attach the tgd file.
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!
That's not too bad a start at all :)
Firstly take a look through the file sharing section. I've uploaded a fully procedural planet a few years back, pretty sure there are a bunch of others in there too. Just do a search for "planet". Take a look at them, pull them apart and see how they work.
Also head over to "New World Digital Art" (http://www.nwdanet.com/), they have some excellent pre-sets including one for an earth type planet. There is also a planet in development which should be released soon that is phenomenal!
What your doing is fine, your approach is correct. "All" you have to do is add in MUCH more detail and variation.
In the terrain group add some hills and mountains as a child of a surface layer preceded by a compute terrain. You can then give them a minimum height in the surface layer.
Try using the "merge" node to blend different terrains and textures together. Also the warp to create twisted mountain ranges.
Hope this helps some.
Cheers
Richard
Thank you very much cyphyr for your help. :) I have been digging through the file sharing section and that website is awesome!
I can't wait to get started and hopefully make some much better planets. I am going to try a few new things then post the results here if I am happy with them.
Thanks again cyphyr for helping me out.
Well I have already found some ways to improve on my planet making techniques. My main focus right now is just to have better shading and break up of color on the continents. I know its not that great yet but its definitely better than the last one. Feel free to give some constructive criticism. :)
