Title: Morning in the Fells
Post by: ratfugel on February 21, 2013, 04:18:12 PM
Somewhat worried about putting this on show, having seen the  level of quality in some of the images here. However, here's something I did after reading up on displacements etc, thinking I ought to try for a bit of atmosphere in my images.

Gorgeous, I love the lighting :) You have captured a specific terrain type nicely.I could quite imagine camping up there.
I can crit if you like but I think you've "captured a moment" here nicely.
Good work and NEVER be afraid of posting, with out feedback and seeing other artists work none of us will ever learn :)

Beautiful lighting and as cyphyr has said you've captured the landscape perfectly.

Agreed, I think you've got a great sense of composition and some nice lighting here.

I like the atmosphere very much, romantic lighting indeed. Well done render. But you can take this further if you wish. Add some shrub or grasses, mainly to the foreground, try to get a different shore coloration, or displacement (one thing you could do is add a surface layer, blended by a fractal (small sizes, slightly stretched Y), blend the fractal by a distribution shader with highest set to 1m above water level, fuzzy zone maybe the same, then set the displacement offset of the surface layer at -1 or a bit more... you'll have an eroded look to the shore. Same can be done with a displacement shader fed by a fractal (using its colors) or with the displacements in the fractal itself, of course).
I would also decrease the roughness of the water a tad and raise the patchy effect. I don't know how big the lake is, but you'd maybe have to reduce the patch size as well. You'll get a lake that's disturbed locally by winds coming around the hills, and it would add some more interest to the water.
And, please, keep on posting!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments.  You don't need to be kind really, I can take criticism. With regard to Dune's comments, I will try what you suggest.  This is the sort of help I feel I need to be able to develop any T2 skills I may have. Meanwhile I feel there should be a waterfall on this image somewhere. I mean a real cascade, not just a dribble! We'll see.  Treat this as a WIP for the time being.

Try this for size.  Told you I fancied some action on this.

Painted in? I think there's not enough height above and steepness for large waterfalls, and you have to choose the site carefully. I mean, where water would be likely to run. What you did just now doesn't feel right, IMO. Coming around the bend would be more likely.

Yep, you are probably right.  Not many waterfalls where I live, (not outside, anyway). Will give it a go. (Often wondered where all the water in the great big falls kept on coming from.  I remember once walking up the side of an apparently dry mountain and getting absolutely sodden.  That would probably account for some of it).

This is definitely bending my imagination.  Now we've finished up with not one, but two centres of interest.  a) trees, b) dribble. I reckon I should have left well alone and moved on. Lol.

I like all of what you've done here. I know what you mean about 'moving on'; but, try what I do - sleep on it. The next morning brings new energy and a pique of creativity. Everybody is different. I find my mornings working on TG2 stuff produces the best results. By evening, the energy has reduced and distractions are high.

Don't give up on this project ...you've got a good thing going on here.
