Title: Mosquitos!
Post by: Hannes on March 02, 2013, 06:43:52 AM
The last image before the NWDA competition (not the slightest idea yet...)
I thought I'd integrate a human character into an image without having to use those horrible poser zombies. I found this website recently:
http://www.3dscanstore.com/index.php/default/free-samples.html
and downloaded the free backpack guy. I imported him into 3ds max. It's really looking quite detailed, but it's just a single mesh. No textures, no grouping. So I thought, how on earth can I texture this guy without the tedious work of separating the faces of each body part (and it's a lot of faces!)?
The answer was easy: not at all.
So it took a whole day to create separate parts of the body: head, T-shirt, arms, hands, backpack, trousers, legs and shoes.
Then I started to texture the parts. The head was a bit difficult: I used an existing texture from 3dsk as far as I remember and tweaked it in PS until it looked right.
I then realized that there is another free sample I could use: the head with the funny facial expression. It's more detailed than the backpack guy's head, and it comes with a texture. So I deleted the old head and replaced it with the new one.
To make it look more real I created body hair and hair on this head by using particle systems and creating meshes out of these I could combine with the original object.
Additionally I created another particle system with ridiculously looking home made low res mosquitos as instances and meshed those too.
Here is the result.
I know that there are nasty shadow artifacts on his left leg (the scene has a fill light setup). If I'll get time I'll render another one with GI, which unfortunately sometimes looks flatter.
And the hands don't look good. It's the mesh. I haven't yet found a way to improve these.

Not far off being a photo. You've done a good job on the model. You might be able to get this to pop a bit more by pulling the shadows in post.

Probably one of the best or the best human image made in TG2 Hannes.
It could more improved with subsurface scattering but that isn't an option unfortunately yet.
You could try to cheat it somehow...maybe in post too.
Anyway... If i made this i would be pleased with this result very much already :)

Wow, thank you! From that distance I wouldn't try to fake SSS. Imho too much subsurface scattering makes a lot of CG humans look too waxy. If it was a closeup, I'd try to make the ears and the tip of the nose a little "glowing". Anyway thanks for the suggestions and the crits.

Agreed! It is clear to me now, that the quality of the model is the most important thing. Previously I had fretted a lot about SSS, and other factors. But you have proven TG2's viability for scenes with humans, Hannes! Thanks!

I cant say it looks like a photograph to me, in this iteration, but I suspect it wood if you really wanted it to.

Awesome!

One quick question.
Hannes, did you make any try at changing the pose? I am just wondering if its something that can be done with relative ease. Because I am under the impression that these 3D scan models have very very high polygon density. And I am also under the impression that this makes posing and animating difficult, or more difficult.
What do you think?

No, I didn't change the pose. I don't think, these models are quite good for that. If the models would have the neutral T-pose, then maybe, but not like that.
Nevertheless some small movements might be possible.

That scan is Jamie from Ten24/Scanstore, he's the man behind some fantastic Lightwave models and helped create the video for the Muse song Absolution. You might want to also look out for Digital Doubles, they have Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie, although they are both nude and would need dressing up or not.

Scarlett Johansson and Angelina Jolie don't need any dressing.

Love the light and the vegetation but feel sorry for the guy. He doesn't seem to be happy at all.

Good job Hannes

Very impressive. We all could use more models like these. Excellent work Hannes.
