Title: Blur a punch
Post by: TheBadger on April 03, 2013, 02:04:43 AM
Hi. new question.

I was looking at the road contest entries that have cars in them, or other objects that if they were real would move.

Of course I can see that the wheels are not moving,  the image suggests a camera with a fast shutter, in photo real terms.
for my entry I also plan to have non terrain elements, and I feel like it would be good to at least attempt to give blur to specific objects at varying degrees.
I saw Hannes' thread and the conversation about the rotors on his helicopters. And I am guessing that could also be used on wheels.

My question is how *could* this be done in terms of more complex movements? For example, a projectile over a still terrain with a motionless camera?
Or more to my immediate needs, a character, human/or animal in fast motion, from a still camera.

So I know there are topics here for DOF. But Thats not what I am asking about. And I know there is software to add motion blur to animation and video, I am presuming that deals with video that contains object or people that are actually moving. So what about adding blur to simulate movement on an object or figure, that is not moving, but posed as such?

Any ideas or links on this? I don't think I have ever seen a thread anywhere that talk about simulating blur in this mannor for a still image. Yet I have seen lots of still images with blurred motion.

I think it is not too hard to make relatively flat parts of objects blurred (with a water shader and an alpha mask as texture) , but as soon as it's more complex the texturing will be different and it is a lot harder. Like the sword; if you make a UV projected map with edges that go black gradually, the sword will be 'blurred'. Theoretically. I tried it with bird wings, and that 'kind of' worked.

Thanks Ulco, but that does not sound like something I want to try. I think as usual I am over complicating everything.

Perhaps since its a still image we are talking about I should just sort of paint the blur in, in PS? Its a littl bit of a strange idea to me to try to do that since I am almost always only trying avoid or remove blur from a image.

I am sure this is something people do though. Have you or anyone reading this, come by some tuts on adding blur in photoshop in the way we are talking about here?

Probably the answer is in one of the digital painting forums? Sounds like their kind of thing, maybe.

Smile, its fun!

There's a blur brush in PS (as well as a sharpen brush).  I sometimes use that.
