Title: Trouble with long (over 7000 frame) camera files in TG2
Post by: djkorova on April 11, 2013, 02:08:23 PM
We recently bought TG2 and are doing a cockpit simulator video that needs to be around 4 and a half minutes, or 7920 frames. I've set this camera animation up in Maya and tried mov/chan files and fbx and after importing them into the TG2 camera, TG2 is slowed down to almost unusable. I'm guessing this is just from the large number of keyframes since they get baked to a key on every frame. Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a workaround?

Hi,

Is it the camera in the 3D preview getting really slow or TG2 generally?

Would you be able to send me an example chan or fbx file please? My email address is:

jomeder@planetside.co.uk

I'll check it out. I'm not sure what the typical number of frames would be for animations but I don't think a lot of people would be using close to 8000 frames in one go. I'll ask the others if they have any workarounds.

Regards,

Jo

It's TG2 in general slowing down, taking longer times to switch between tabs and so on.  I'll send the fbx file, thanks for your help!

I suppose a .chan wouldn't interfere too much with NDA as it's useless anyway without any other context present.
Perhaps you can past the .chan here for others to test/confirm?

Here is the fbx file I'm using...

Hi,

I can confirm the behaviour. TG2 slows to a crawl...

I notice that the distance increments in the camera paths are extremely small. Whether this has any bearing, I know not.

The paths look relatively straightforward, any reason why they can't be created in TG2 then exported as a chan file ?

I deleted the cameras and TG2 returned to being responsive.

Yeah when I import I think I scaled it up 10,000. You are correct that the paths are not too complicated and might be able to be done in TG2. But with the way the curve editor works in TG, I thought it would be simpler and faster, at least for me, to create the path in Maya.

Hi,

When you say you had difficulties with curve editor do you mean that it's tricky to set up a motion path with it? If so, that's fair enough, because I think it's probably difficult to do that in any app's curve editor compared to being able to manipulate the path directly in 3D. If it was something else I'd be interested to hear the problem you had though.

Jo

I was just surprised to see that the curve can only be all linear or all spline. I'm used to being able to manipulate each keyframe's curve in and out type and having bezier handles. I'm sure you can achieve the same results with TG2, but that's why for me I chose to do the camera animation in Maya. Besides that though, we are loving TG2!
