Title: USGS Canopy as tree population density
Post by: bigben on June 01, 2007, 06:35:13 AM
Here's a quick demo render of the canopy data from USGS used as a tree population density shader.

The original image is green/grey. I converted the red channel to greyscale, normalised the pixel values and then plugged it into TG.  The only modification to the mask was subtracting surfaces with a slope > 75 degrees
.  It could use some tweaking of the density either via the density setting or adjusting the mask image but given the ease with which the mask can be created it's a very promising start.

QTVR version of the panorama:
<http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~bernardk/tgdemo/yosemite.mov> (http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~bernardk/tgdemo/yosemite.mov) 225kb.

I'll have to revise my TER workflow to see if I can smooth out some of the stepping in the very flat areas.

Hay went to check the QTVR out, but it would not give me perrmissions to download, need to set them /smiles.... sounds interesting brother.

Side note - I took a semi panorama photo from that exact location years ago and still have it!  Nice work, as it looks pretty much like that shape wise.

yup 403 for me too!...otherwise looks promising!

Mind scanning it so we can see?

Hi Will,

I'll try to put it up when I get home from work.  Its already digital, so no scanning required.

Here is the pic I took a few years ago.  This was assembled by hand before I fully knew what I was doing.  Very similar to the above render.

Copied and pasted one too many characters in the URL (had a ">" at the end) Fixed now ;).

Must have a tall tripod  ;)  Seriously though, it's a great reference pic. I have another render of a cloud test running at the moment which has a higher tree density although I see that it needs to be higher still. A few hours left to go.

heheh, actually I took the pics by hand, then assembled them in Photoshop (my first time).  I can now put them together without the flaws... its a shame I didn't save the original images :-(  Still kicking myself.  I guess its a good reason to go back.

Nice pic.  Beautiful landscape!

Hi,
could you explain me how to do this?
thanks
