Title: Juniper - closer up added
Post by: mhaze on May 27, 2013, 05:01:29 PM
Just had to give Silva3d's gnarly juniper a go!  Used rotated voronoi for the cracks and displacement to vector node for grass placement.

Beautiful stuff Mick. I used to collect the Utah Junipers while in Utah several times that I used for 'bonsai' trees back in the late seventies and eighties. the trunks had that silvery/gray bark; gnarled and twisted making them excellent subjects for bonsai. Going to have to visit Walli's site and get one of those.

I like it a lot too.

Would like to see it more focused on the area around the tree. The background distracts me from the part I really like.
Love how the grass is worked. Like the rocks too. Has a magical feel to it. I would spend all day in a place like this if I came upon it while walking.

Cheers Badger,

I do agree about the background, I tried to soften it but the more I look at it the more it bothers me.  Focusing in on the tree is worth trying I'll do another render I also want to try another veiwpoint. The main purpose of the piece was to explore plant distribution with the displacement to vector node and the use of rotated voronoi for the cracks.

Really good rovks texxture and grass distribution. I like your lower clouds and subtle colours.

Cheers all.  Efflux the grass distribution is driven by a displacement to vector node.  Gives some interesting results.

I like the close up here. Would like to see this in a vertical format with the trunk exposed and less foliage; and, a bit more surrounded by rocks and stones.

Also, while in Utah, I've collected several specimens of the Juniper (in Utah, they refer to them as Cedars) for 'bonsai'. Typically, the trunks and branches of older plants are a silvery gray in color and texture. Only those that are young and have optimal growing conditions display the reddish to rust colored trunks and branches.

Thanks for the info choronr.  I'm away for a couple of days when I come back I'll do another render.
