Title: Airfield
Post by: pokoy on June 17, 2013, 05:50:54 AM
Another work we've produced for Lufthansa.

While all of the foreground objects were rendered in 3ds max/Brazil, the credits for the background, sky, lighting and overall atmosphere go to TG. WM used for erosions on the mountains.
Hope you like it!

Great render and pretty much photo real. That model of the Airbus is incredibly detailed!

Thanks Richard. Yeah, the model is highly detailed, we actually try to texture only what's painted in reality as well, so most of the screws and rivets are actual geometry. Since we sometimes produce close ups for high res print work we need a very detailed model.

Here's a link to the post over at cgtalk with some detail crops, bigger image and a 'clay' version without any textures:

Looks cool :)
You said in the CGI talk that a spherical pano was used for the reflections and HDR lighting. Any chance you could post that and this image in the Terragen 3 images thread (http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,16222.0.html). It's been announced so it's not a secret any more. Understand if it's NDA stuff and all that. :)

Oh it's still TG2, I only rendered 90° views and stitched them together to get a spherical image.
I had no access to TG3 and had no clue it's on the horizon... I wish I had :)

Excellent work! I imagine the new spherical camera will help you out quite a bit in the future, too. :)

Excellent render again, cool result and perspective!

The wing looks a bit "short" or kind of "fold up" for me and the post integration of 2D typos and signs needs also more love in the future..

Keep up the quality work, you rock!  :D

Thank you all. It's interesting to see what people see and notice, after working on the image for a longer time I certainly lost the ability to look at it with a 'fresh' eye. Postproduction has been heavy on this one too, so I may have decided to emphasize one thing and forgot about another. Plus, something tells me it's still not finished but I need to move on.

I hope to have more of these full CG setups in the future. I actually would like to do some personal car rendering projects where I can involve TG, with some really spectacular views. Though I really need to learn more about the in-depth stuff in TG first, when looking at some of the setups posted here regularly by some of you it feels like I've only scratched the surface of what's possible, there's some amazing stuff in the gallery here!

Without being too picky, I feel the blend of model into sky is a bit off-putting, particularly for a commercial project. I think I would have toned the sky down a bit to make the aircraft stand out better. Is this a Modo Model? If so, then it's over-lit, under the wing area. I know there's tarmac reflection, but I doubt it would be that much, as the sun is on the other side.  Great job anyway.

There are some shadow issues, the most obvious for me are the reflections of shadows on the underside of the engines do not match up wit the shadows on the ground and I find the shadows on the ground a little too dark given the amount of light being bounced around.
