I'm trying to do more Terragen than I have been the last many months and this is one of the few concepts I've come up with that I actually like. It's very dark right now, but that will probably change along with potentially everything else in the image. Lets see where it goes.

The rings are a disc object with an image map shader projecting onto the Y surface to control the color and transparency.

Looks very good. I have no idea how to improve this.
