Title: Crater Lake 2013
Post by: Tangled-Universe on July 05, 2013, 11:54:31 AM
This is based on a previous work Frank and I made together last year.
It's an experiment on lighting and reflections.
I may tweak it further here and there, but I think this is pretty much it.

Cheers,
Martin

Beautiful! The reflection of the water looks very soft. Maybe you can add some wind patch effect to break up the surface reflection a little?

Thanks guys :)

I'm not so keen yet on the composition, would like to have a tad bit more water visible beneath the reflection.

Hannes, there are wind patches already. A bit stronger then?

Gorgeous image Martin, great soft render.  If you go any further perhaps drop off quite a bit of the sky as I'm not sure it is really helping (makes the mountain seem smaller than maybe it should be).  Also maybe do a little work on the hard edge shoreline to break it up a bit, bring the beach/brown areas up a bit in some places and the trees/groundcover down a bit in others.

Yes, a bit maybe?!

Thanks for these great suggestions. I'll see what I can do about them.
The difficulty is that the shoreline is very flat and thus looks like a super straight line consequently.
Perhaps I will mix in a masked terrain to guide where I want the dips/rises.

Or would you prefer objects and the like?

Thanks Hannes, seems my first feeling was the best as my earlier versions had sharper and more choppy windpatches.
I'll revert to those settings, because you have now confirmed my concern I already had.

Cheers,
Martin

Really nice Martin, have you used some special technique or is it just the water shader?

Thanks Mick, I didn't use special tricks or something specific from TG3.

The lighting looks perfect to me. Agree with Hannes about the wind patches, the composition could also work in landscape format with less of sky. Maybe a light cirrus layer would also help breakup the reflections in the water a little. In terms of realism it's up there with the best, especially the lighting and terrain. Looking forward to your next iteration.

I would also prefer a bit more patchiness in the water. It looks a bit like simply blurred in PS now, I'm afraid. And the suggestions of a few wisps of cloud and a landscape ratio would enhance the render as well I think.

Thank you all guys,

An update is in the making.
I made a couple of adjustments:

1) smaller, sharper and more choppy wind patches
2) slightly less soft reflections
3) found a glitch in the snow setup and fixed it
4) made the composition more balanced, by going from 600x900 to 600x840, panning slightly more to the left and tilted the camera slightly down.

To do later

1) break up straight shore line
2) perhaps a tad bit more variation in the trees

What I probably won't do is adding whisps of clouds.
I tried that already and it just looks annoying and unbalanced.
With this typical lighting you can't get clouds which look up to par with the rest of the image.
I think this generally looks quite photoreal, but adding clouds messes this up.
Besides that they are hard to reflect in the water in nice quality and on top of that the whole image becomes a "busy" looking mirror.

What I can do in regard to clouds is adding some blown snow or clouds at the upper ridges of the mountains.
So for now clouds in the desolate atmosphere aren't in my plans, unless somebody can convince me that you can achieve photorealistic clouds at sunset.
I don't want to make concessions to the realism this time.

Very pretty and calming atmosphere. I can not wait to see the new version.

The colors are gorgeous! The blues are perfect.

Not the most photorealistic render, but very beautiful!
Great colours!

The soft reflection is beautiful. Would I be correct in assuming that you are using the reflection shader instead of a water shader?

Yes you are correct :)

And man, it's slooooow...this is with reflection softness @ 0.004 with a bogging 48 samples.

I absolutely love the lighting in this. Looking forward to seeing the next iteration.
