Title: Waterfalls
Post by: Dune on August 15, 2013, 02:45:21 AM
Hannes 'floating' made me think and experiment a little. Thanks, Hannes.

Wow that's great!  What did you use for the falls?  Clouds?

Clever.  I must sort out waterfalls!

Cool. Love these kinds of things. Have to recommend real flow for 90 bucks though.
Its rather clear at this point that clouds are just never going to cut it. I like it for mock ups though and for conceptualization.

Realflow for 90 bucks? I thought it was more than a grand?

Falls are partly just colored cliff side + reflection, partly clouds.

Glad, that I made you think, Ulco.  ;) That looks great!
But I think, now it's secret sharing time! What does partly clouds mean? How did you do that precisely?

The upper half is a mask projected from within the planet, smoothing the rock displacements and providing watercolor+reflection, but as soon as this is starting to bend inwards near the bottom of the planet, it's taken over by clouds, masked by the same mask. It's a bit tricky though to get it right; the stretched cloud doesn't really warp against the rock, unless (maybe) I use the special cloud stuff, but I didn't.

Ah, thanks for your explanation, Ulco.

Looking at this suggests it might be time to rethink the theories of how
planets come into existence. ;)

Letting your thoughts run wild ...very nice.

It looks really nice, the only thing I can think of to add would be some dampness to the rocks close to the waterfalls.

Learning addition, Ulco. Sorry, should have clarified that in my first post.

Continuing the 'waterfall line', here's a WIP. Transformed it into B&W as well, I really like that. Needs work of course.

Very atmospheric clouds. As u have said the waterfalls need work.

The clouds are superb, Ulco. Looking forward to see the falls improved.
I have to say that the rock texture looks kind of weird to me. Maybe it's a little bit too much swirly?!

I like especially the first images Ulco.

Yeah, these later WIP's don't go anywhere. The clouds are nice alright, but I was attempting to get streams and falls only in gullies with a lot of complicated stuff, but it's not what I expected. Taking too much time to get it realistic, especially on such a massive watery scale, so I'm off to another venue (procedural rice fields).
