Suggestions......................?
From what I can see it looks great, but is way too dark
Yes, it's nice, but needs a fill light from the right.
very nice. i like the path and trees
i make a wish : to make views like that ;)
Looking good, but yeah a bit more light.
Dune, in your experience do you think it's possible to now do away with fill lights now? I was always of the opinion that you'd get better\more realistic lighting if you just stuck with the sun and then used GI and exposure to gain light in shadow.
Looks like it may be good but it's too dark.
It's lovely, but yeah needs more light. Rather than using a fill, try upping your GI to 1.7 or 1.8?
Great atmosphere, just a little bit of more lighting and it's perfect!
toss a coin in?
looks great, really great!
maybe a little under exposed?
still lovely detailing!
cheers

I don't see why fill lights can't be used anymore, I do. It might be an interesting experiment to see what difference it yields, either fill light or higher GI.
I had a fill light to the right of the well and it made everything "flat". I upped the GI to 3,3,8 and bounce to 3, maybe higher? ???
I have always been a great fan of the fill light setup, but the downside is you may get additional ugly shadows. If you turn off "cast shadows" for the fill lights, everything looks flat as mentioned above.
I'd suggest increasing "strength on surfaces" in the environment light tab. You may start with 1.5 and see how it looks. This way the darker areas are a bit lighter without losing the shadow details created by the GISD.
The fill light without shadow won't throw a shadow obviously, but only lights one side. So if you place them (it) carefully, you can still get depth. If you set them at 80-90 degrees of your camera angle for instance. And don't overdo the strength of course, just a little extra. I used them in my canyon as bounce lights from 45 degrees below.
Set the strength on the environment light to 1.5 per Hannes suggestion...............any better?
By the way, there was much use of the content provided by Planetside (and others). Thanks guys. ;)
One of your best works; darn near picture perfect!
Thanks Bob............still not completely satisfied with it. :(
Not being satisfied is a good thing; you'll no doubt make it better. Maybe a change of cloud cover?
Thought about that..................the lighting bothers me more than anything else. Keep playin......................... ::)
The last one looks good.
Did you tried to play with the lighting in post with an EXR or render elements Yossam ?
Yes...............it improved, but not where I want it. May have to use the render elements to get what I'm looking for. Which I know nothing about. ???
What you might try is a second sun 180 degrees from the main sun; but, at a lower altitude and at very, very low strength.
Tried that already Bob............wasn't as satisfied with it as with the increase in the environment light.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway. :)
For me the problem is the light is coming from a back angle. Why not just the sun position? Or tone map an exr. Otherwise you'll never get that shadow soft enough to not be the POF.
Right now the POF is the shadow. Not whats casting the shadow, not whats in the background, but the shadow its self. From a photography perspective, you either move the sun. Or you tone map it differently than you have it now. Ideally, I would move the sun.
Other than that I love everything in the image.
The sun is about 90 degrees to the left of the well..............I moved the sun all over except the right side, might have to try that. Thanks Michael. ???
When I started this image I had another idea in mind..................godrays coming from behind the well at a high angle. Couldn't get it right (got tired of fooling with it).
This is definatley top notch!
Changed the lighting.............which is better?
There's more light here, but my personal preference is still your second version.
I agree, the 2nd is your best so far.
hmmmm, yeah. I like 2 better too. But then the problem remains. Yossam, you said you tried a bunch of sun positions. But why could you not get it so that there was just a little more light hitting the front of the object?
I definitely did not think you should kill all of the shadows. Zen is someplace between image 2 and 3, I think.
You just need a little sun light on the front to make the object pop in its own shadow. To pull it to the front so there is balance with object, the shadow, and rest of comp.
Does that make sense or am I babbling now? Time to sleep.
I think maybe I'm thru................
By the way, I love this new lighting system. ;D
You nailed it Richard!
Yeah great stuff! What GI did you use in the end? I often go to 1.7 or 1.8, depending on the environment I want to convey
Great result.
Here is a screen grab of the GI setup..................added a fill light at 50% gray with strength set at .2, I put it at 13 degrees of elevation.
Render settings were: Quality .7 and AA 6 and it rendered in about 90 minutes.
It ended as a great render!
Your idea for the fill light helped a lot.................thanks. :D
